Lens Repair In Manchester

I bought a Nikon AF-S 18-105mm f/3.5-5.6G lens from MPB Photographic about 9-10 months ago. Unfortunately, it's now developed a very dodgy sounding auto-focus motor. It seems to focus okay, if not a little slowly, and the picture quality seems alright, I think.

Does anyone know of a good shop to take it to in Manchester to get it looked at and possibly repaired? I'm really hoping it doesn't cost too much :(
 
That lens doesn't cost alot used, so if the cost is too much compare to buying another one i would suggest just getting another one instead. It all depend on what the problem is, i know replacing AF motor on the lens is not cheap .......

I know Calumet have a repair centre.

Ah ha, Calumet! That's the place I've had recommended to me before (and subsequently forgot the name of). Thanks.

I know it's a relatively cheap lens, but I'll still be annoyed if it dies after so short a time. Fingers crossed that it's nothing too serious.
 
bad news about the lens but have you contacted MPB about it?

I know there may be no warranty left but they will not like it that their goods have become faulty and may help you in finding a cheaper solution.

I live near Rochdale and have used the shop but never for repairs. Calumet may well send them to a 3rd party repairer and I know they have used Lehmans in Stoke.

Good luck in whatever you decide.
 
Calumet in Manchester have their own carpark if you are driving and are only a couple of minutes walk from Piccadilly Station if you are on the train.

Pretty sure the last time I discussed repairs with them, in Manchester, they said that they don't carry out repairs themselves but send the item to the manufacturers approved repairer. It's a valuable service to professional photographers as they can then rent a temporary replacement, for the casual photographer with low value lens it may not be so good a deal.

It may be worth sending your lens direct to the approved service agent for Nikon and cut out the middleman. H Lehmann (Stoke) are the company to contact.

Lehmans are Nikon approved but you would have to ship it to them. That said I had a fault with a 300 AF-S f4 which had to be sent to Nikon as the AF motor needed changing, if its the same or a similar fault you may find yourself in a similar predicament.
 
Calumet are an official drop off point for Nikon, they can service and sensor clean your gear but aren't set up to take on repairs, if you get it to them they will ship it fully insured to an official repair centre of your choice.
 
Thanks everyone for the replies.

Will Calumet be able to tell me if it's the AF motor or something else? At the moment I only know that it's making a weird noise, so having a second opinion or a quote for repair would be useful before having to hand over any cash.
