Lens servicing

I've had most of my lenses in bits at some point due to fungus or dirt or bits being loose.

If you're quite handy they aren't as bad as a lot of people think.

If you want it professionally doing it'd probably cost a similar amount to the price of a new lens.

What's actually wrong with it and is it affecting image quality?

It has a reasonably large dust spot in front of the rear element and it is stiff when zooming

Hi Nathan

The 28-80 is an older lens and probably not cost effective to repair / service, give Canon a ring @ Elstree and see if they can give you an idea of cost...

If it's not cost effective, is it bothering you the dust / stiff zoom ring ? Can it be a DIY repair - have a quick google and see if there are any videos out there - if you're unhappy with the lens and not having it repaired, kind of nothing to loose...

i had my Canon 17-85mm lens fixed and serviced.

cost £125 for the service and £65 for the repair ( just an internal screw had come loose)

Well the lens i had repaired was worth less than the repair cost, but it was done though insurance.

If i had to pay i wouldn't of bothered.
 
With the dust try extending it to full zoom (off the camera) and try blowing a rocket blower down the gaps at the back of the lens, might just move it depending on how the lens is constructed.

With the stiff zoom try zooming in and out quickly a good few times (without crashing the lens at each end of the stops), the grease over time can become quite stiff, if you're lucky a good working of the grease can sometimes loosen it up a bit.

The 28-80mm isn't insured, so I'd be paying out.

If it was me, I wouldn't pay to have it serviced...


Might be worth a look at it yourself, to see if you can do anything re dust

DIY is another option but I wouldn't know what I'm doing and would probably end up making it worse
