Yes
can lens's go soft?
my 70-300 is seems to have lost its sharpness. even on a tripod with a remote release the shots seem to be a bit soft. dont know if its down to my every decreaseing skill level . if it is the lens can i get it fixed.

cheers

It could also be that you are getting more critical of your shots, I know that when I look at shots that I used to think were sharp they seem soft now.

Knocks to the lens won't help.
Take any filters off, turn IS off, and perform the 4 corners test using the tripod
Aim at a wall, square on, at a good distance (not minumum), and take a shot. Then rotate the camera 180 degrees and take another shot. Compare the sharpness of the 4 corners. If the issue is due to a knock, then it probably will not be even all over the FOV

thanks coldpenguin.
iv been useing a focus chart to test but will try with the wall.

If it is one of the focus charts which you put at 45 degrees to the lens, and at a short distance, don't let Hoppy hear you say that!

With my 70-300, I thought I had an issue with the lens. Real world pics just weren't coming out too sharp. And when I used a focus chart, at a small distance, it did seem to be a problem. However, the minimum focusing length for this lens is 1.5m, so I put up a piece of A4 at 10m, and took a shot of that. Came out quite crisp. Must have been my technique that needed improving, not the lens

Quite.

And don't start me on your unusual interpretation of the 'four corners test' either :D
