Lens suggestion for Egypt?

There was a few reasons why Im considering a 50D, Or even a 40D. I like the size of the camera, a magnesium body would be beneficial for toughness and piece of mind. And currently I'm more used to the function of a scroll wheel for shutter and aperture separately. I'd also like the better Autofocus and the lens micro adjustment that My 500D doesn't offer me (its not greatly beneficial for me to get a new body, these are things I've been looking for). I wouldn't actually be looking to get one until the end of may onwards so there's still time to change my mind :P.

I will be buying a Tamron 17-50mm 2.8 non vc, I can pick one up new for £217 from one-stop digital. A 67mm CP filter, and maybe some square filters. Possibly a gorillapod. And I've also been looking at a Hama mini pro traveler tripod and a Vanguard Biin 59 bag, I like the fact its not overly big a doesn't look like a general camera bag. Which I feel would be a bonus. I've got general accessories that would be getting taken also.

Thats pretty much my gear I'd be taking, if anyone has some suggestions on anything else I should be taking, post something :)
(I'll ask nicely, could we avoid the repetitive comments about the Egyptian governing body's/police etc? I'm aware it's going to be tricky in certain areas, thanks for all the replys regarding the issues)

With CPLs it might be worth getting the biggest diameter you think you might need and stepping rings to take it down to the diameter of the other lenses you have. That means you only need 1 filter.

I use a 77mm (diameter of my 10-22, biggest lens) with rings to take it down to my other lens sizes. Take some lens cleaner spray with you - can't get any equivalents there and the water contains a lot of minerals so not great for cleaning anything at all.

The dust problem although there is LOTS of it i think is overrated camera wise. In 4+ years my gear hasn't had any noticeably worse accumulations or damage than use elsewhere. Obviously in lots of places it'll be windy so best not to change a lens in the desert facing into the wind etc but common sense means you can nullify the problem.
Ive never used a UV or other lens protection filter either and never had a problem.
 
Good idea regarding the filter size, I'll only be taking two lenses, the other a Canon 70-200 f4. Both filter sizes are 67mm.

Some lens cleaning liquid would be a good investment aswell, it's going down on the list.
 
Went to Egypt in November and just took one lens - canon 18-200, never had any problems with the locals, just took a slack handful of £1 coins (which they love) and learnt a few basic Egyptian words. La Shokran was the best !!!!

Will definitely be going back a few times, there is so much to see.
