Lens suggestions, try before buy

I'm looking to buy a good lens for my 40D early in the new year and as I've got a week off next week I was thinking of hiring one.
I've got a 17-85mm F4 right now and it's good for what I'm doing which is mainly land/seascapes in all weathers and light conditions but I want to save up for a really good lens. Money is kinda no object, it just means I save up for a little longer hehe.
Here's what I've been looking at on lensesforhire.co.uk.

Canon EF 14mm f/2.8 L II USM
Canon EF-S 10-22mm f/3.5-4.5 USM
Canon EF 16-35mm f/2.8 L II USM

What other similar lens might you recommend?

FYI I really don't use my zoom much if at all but a little zoom is handy for composition sometimes.
Also, as I'm not on a budget, I'd reallly like to stick with Canon gear (but that's not definite;) ) and I quite like the idea of a faster lens than my F4 for low light seascapes.

So in a nutshell, which lenses should I try out, taking into account I'll be trying 2 (maybe 3 lenses over the next month or so) before buying.

The EF 17-40 f4 L is a very well thought of lens so maybe have a look at it.

I'm saving for the EF-S 17-55 f2.8 IS - it's not an L lens but from the sounds of it that's only because it's not an EF mount. Nice wide aperture and IS make it a good choice for what I want to do with it.

IMHO I also think the build quality isn't good enough to make it an 'L' either :)

I'd also heard the build quality isn't quite as good, but I'm sure I read the lenses used are of L series quality.

EF-S 10-22. It's really your only choice.

17-40L and 17-55 2.8 won't do anything for you in terms angle of view, and if you're shooting landscapes at mid-range apertures you'll be hard pressed to see any difference at all.

There are cheaper alternatives to the 10-22 but they're not as good. It will really open things up for you, literally :)
 
i have a Sigma 10-20mm lens & i love it to bits. I'm no professional at photography by any means, but you can see some of the images it's took in my Flickr [see signature]. It's one of the best things i've ever bought.
 
The 10-22 is a nice good lens. It is difficult to get the hang of at 10mm, you /have/ to have a good foreground subject. I prefer the safety of the QC system of Canon over the sigma, but if you find a good copy of the sigma that is meant to be good too. I think there are 3 versions though, not all as good as each other.

The 10mm end can be good fun for people photos too.

It isn't an L, and compared to the only L I have, the 100-400, it is not as solid. It is on a par with the 28-135 if you have seen that?
 
Well I am veering towards buying the 10-22 in the new year but as I've never used a L glass or a prime lens before I'm gonna hire the 14mm for a few days. I'll be trying out the 10-22 at a later date as I'm 80% sure thats the one I'll be buying.

Having previously owned both the 17-55 IS USM and 10-22 USM when I had my 40D I can say that optically they are both superb. With crop, certainly on par with the 17-40 and 24-105 'L's I have now with FF. I traded a 17-85 for the 17-55 and they really don't compare.

Build quality wise they aren't comparable to the L's, although the 10-22 is damn close. However, neither are flimsy tat and for the 40D they make a brilliant combination.
