Lens test, what to do?

Hi all.

A lens has come up on Gumtree that is a bargain (that is if everything is ok with it). He states he does not have the box or front lens cover but is in top working condition.

If I meet him to try the lens out, what tests should I carry out to ensure all is ok?

Shots wide open only? (I.e if they're sharp they all will?)
Shots throughout the range?
How can I test for less obvious problems?
How to check its exposing correctly?
Is there a way I can check age of lens from a serial number etc?

Should I take laptop to check enlarged photos?

Any help appreciated, cheers

Shoot at a range of apertures to check lens does in fact stop down or use depth of field button on your camera if it has one. What lens is it zoom, prime does it have image stabilisation?
Check zoom is neither too stiff or too loose, check os works
Check for any sign of damage to front rear elements
Check for signs of fungus indide the lens
As you say take a numberbof shots and try to review on a pc not just camera screen.
Good luck
Andrew
