Lens to accompany my new D7000

Tamron 17-50 2.8?
 
Really depends on what you'd like to shoot. I'd always go for a prime. For portraits a 50mm 1.8 would be great for £100ish or a 1.4 for £360

If you are going to spend that sort of money I would throw a little extra at it and pick up a used Nikon 17-55 f/2.8. If you don't want to spend more get the Tamron 17-50 f/2.8.
 
I'm looking for a general everyday lens to start with. I had a range of low level lenses but have recently sold them all so I can invest in better ones.

I had a 50mm prime which was a nice lens but I found I didn't use it a great deal. I'm more into shooting motorsport or car shows, etc.
 
If your going to get a 16-85 look for a used one. Price of a new one is silly but used there better. Some places say just as good optically as the Nikon 17-55. But downside is no fixed f2.8. Also as has been said Tamron 17-50 f2.8 is well liked too.

Myself I have the 16-85 brought used from MPB and its hardly off the camera.
 
Thanks for the reply. I have read a fair bit on the 16-85mm and it does sound quite promising. The Tamron really has thrown a spanner in the works so to speak! I really like the idea of having fixed f/2.8.
 
Get as good glass as you can afford. It will make your camera sing...;)

I pondered long and hard over what lens to put on my D7000. I wanted something that was high quality, cover the wide angle but give me a bit of reach, but as much as anything I wanted a lens that would enable me to physically carry around, sort of unobrusively, I think I had the term "short and stumpy" in my head when I was choosing (don't ask), anyway, the 16-85mm seemed to fit my needs perfectly.

I purchased when Nikon were giving £50 cashback and cost me £405, no regrets.
 
I find it quite difficult to recommend lenses to others, as I don't know how they shoot, but for my own style I wouldn't buy the 16-85.

For that sort of price on DX I'd want a fast lens (i.e., 2.8 or faster) and the 16-85 is just too slow in this regard. I think the 18-70 f/3.5-4.5 offers similar sharpness, is slightly faster, and can be picked up for 1/4 the price. The only things you really lose are a few millimetres on each end and VR; but are these worth over £300 more to you?

If you really wanted a zoom lens, I'd either pick up that 18-70 with a 35 f/1.8 for low light or the Tamron 17-50 f/2.8. Both of these options come in around £250ish total.

Again, it's all very personal though; I almost exclusively use primes, so there's no one way to go.

You are absolutely right and I have found the limitations in this lens's speed and I have been looking at alternatives but in all honesty, and once again it's a personal thing, I still think I made the right decision.

Yep, I can see this being a good lens for someone who often uses a tripod or who likes to shoot at smaller apertures handheld (VR comes in handy here). Those looking to shoot fast moving subjects or isolate their subjects might struggle.

It can be the right lens for the right job for the person; you just need to determine if that's you.
 
The 16-85 is a great lens and you should be able to get great results out of it. Its not f2.8 but it got VR which I am sure you will find very handy.
