lens to go with nikon d40x

I have been asked by a friend for some advice on Nikons, being a Canon user I don't have a clue.

He was interested in a F 1.8d af nikkor 50mm lens but this does not autofocus, is there something similar that will autofocus that you can recommend?

Well there is the new 50mm AF-S Nikon which will auto-focus on bodies without built in AF so that would seem most logical if in fact he's after that focal length on a crop.
Alternatively if he's after 50mm in terms of field of view then the 35mm f1.8 would be ideal.
