It looks like I've been able to scrounge a media pass for the BTCC round at Oulton :D so I'm looking for some longer glass. I've already got 10-20, 24-70 & 70-200, should I go for the 100-400 or is it time for a prime.

I'm getting cramp in my face with excessive grinning

I would say a 70-200 would be enough at most places for Oulton Park. If you fancy a prime why not the 300mm f4 IS? It's only about 50 quid for a week from lenses for hire.

If you think 70-200 is long enough I'll stick with it. I've never been to Oulton before so wanted to make sure I got best use of the vest :)

i use the 100-400 at oulton and a 70-200 with a 1.4x tc, for most areas, if you have a media pass to get trackside, the 70-200 and tc will do fine i reckon

i have an idea ! scrounge me a media pass and i'll lend you my 100-400 and i'll use a 70-200

Agreed, you can do a goodly proportion of Oulton without a pass with a 200 [or rather you used to be able to before they started moving fences back], with a pass, unless you actually want the drivers eyes behind the helmet to fill the frame, I think that length would be enough. Haven't been for a few years though but like Richard said, perhaps push to 300 if you really feel the need for some extra length.

70-200 and a 300 for me at Oulton
first time i went, and knowing it from a riders point of view,
i lugged the lot just in case, but never used the 600mm which surprised me
it is very easy to get up close and in there

i wouldn't even bother going down the old "dust sucker" 100-400 route
its a good wildlife lens but next to useless as a motorsport and action lens
i have one (unfortunately) but it never gets an outing to a track

but next to useless as a motorsport and action lens

can you explain why please ? i'm a bit puzzled as to the reasoning behind that statement, it's canons most popular motorsport type lens i believe  on top of that, mine is far better than my 70-200 for motorsport ! just as sharp and great flexability

Some would say that in terms of aperture is quite slow - f4.5-5.6 which in the tree shrouded Oulton and Cadwell Park means that focussing can suffer or you have to raise the ISO earlier and if its a less than lovely day this will happen sooner rather than later. Maybe in sunny Australia or California then there is a stronger argument?

Personally I'd look at a longer prime especially if you have two bodies to reduce lens swapping.

However, I quite liked the push/pull design, and if Canon updated it with latest version IS and constant f4, then that would be a good upgrade.

you rarely if ever see a motorsport pro with one
as its simply not fast enough and the push pull action sucks dust and all manner of stuff in there
i reckon its a good seller because people buy it thinking its a good long lens on the cheap

Strange, I quite often see event togs with the 100-400, especially at trackdays and at Castle Coombe. It's quite a versatile lens and allows several shots in sequence to be taken.

Constant F4 and latest IS would be great :D

I've had mine for quite some time now and not had a problem with the push pull and dust, although I've heard of the rumour. Is it something you've experienced?

well ive had one for some time now in a bag full of L lenses and never found it to be satisfactory for my job
the shots it produces are often dull and lifeless
and like i say i know of no "Motorsport Pro" with one on race day

IMHO a 70-200 f2.8 runs rings around it in all areas

I would have said as your going to be trackside your 70-200 should be fine for the majority of the track, might be worth hiring a 300 if it's only about £50 so you can have a play with a prime also

Good luck and I hope you enjoy it trackside.

Interesting as this is on my shopping list. Is this for the depth of field/light or just general quality/sharpness is better?

I hired a sigma 100-300 when i went to the bsb races couple of years ago.

Did the job nicely.

for pro work it simply isn't good enough for a variety of reasons
ok.... if its all i had then i would have to make do but i dont
its slow and clumsy with an F8 sweet spot and old school IS sytsem

apparently its fine for personal use as plenty of people on the other side of the fence swear by them but its not a patch on my other lenses and the end result is clearly different too

i wouldn't be happy submitting pictures taken with one to my clients unless like i said it was the only lens i had to hand and i had to make do

There is a lot of Outlon Park that's not tree shrouded - from Deers leap to the Dunlop (or whatever sponser name they are calling it presently), so hopefully this wouldn't be a problem

There seemed to be lots of 100-400 lenses there a couple of weeks ago for the F3 / GT meeting
