Lens to replace my nasty kit lens, ef-s 18-55mm

Yes
Well my ef-s 18-55 feels like a toy and has a plastic sound when manual focusing and the AF is noisy enough to scare of animals.

So my shopping list is something with the same sought of focal length, a little more top end zoom would be a bonus, and it must be quiet, sharp and quick at focusing, preferably to include IS as well.

I've been slightly warned of the ef-s 17-85mm is usm so I'm open to suggestions.

Doesn't have to be a canon.

Nearly forgot budget is under £200, second hand is obviously ok.

Check out the Sigma and Tamron f2.8 options at fredmiranda.com, some of them might be around £200 used, in fact I grabbed a superb 24-60 Sigma f2.8 on fleabay for £140 which we use ass kit zoom on the 50d trainer. Xlnt results.

Tamron 17-50mm f/2.8 (non-VC) - probably get one used for around £190. VC version is very new so likely to be closer to original RRP

There is nothing wrong with the 17 - 85mm lens and it is worth consideration. If you are close to the Cambrigeshire area you are more than welcome to try mine on your camera.

 Another vote for the Sigma 24-60mm f2.8. It is smaller than the 24-70mm and is reputed to have a better IQ. I'm very happy with mine and you can pick them up for around second hand.
