Lens trade-in?

Have a d5100 with 18-55 kit (and a few other lenses). I am thinking about trading in the kit lens for something with more reach, like a 18-105, for walk-abouts without having to change lens. What are your thoughts on this? Are there any other lenses I should consider? Should I put more £££ to it, then trade in my 18-55 and 55-200 VR for the 18-200?

Hmm... dpreview says this:

Just occasionally, the old cliches are still the best, and with the 18-200mm VR the phrase 'jack of all trades, master of none' springs immediately to mind. It's a lens which delivers somewhat flawed results over its entire zoom range; where it's sharp, it has heavy distortion, and when that distortion comes under control at the long end, it loses sharpness.

So, would I be better going for the 18-105 and 55-200 option instead of just one lens?

Have a look at the 18-70 and the 70-300VR.....probably the best two budget lenses you'll get for Nikon AF-S cameras. The first can be had for around 70-80£ on eBay and the second for about 280-300. Both deliver excellent results and build quality is far superior to any kit lens...including the 18-105.

Thanks. Hadn't considered the 18-70, will look into it. Might not be much of an upgrade to the 18-55 for walk-about, or is IQ better? Don't need the extra reach of the 70-300, so will stick with the 55-200 VR I have (which I am very happy with!)

I know the one I mention has a little less reach but I'm willing to bet the majority of your shots will be sub 60mm. Moat of mine certainly we're.....and you can always get a little closer to the subject.
Do some googling and you'll see just how good the reviews are for this lens....on here too its highly rated.

Yeah - you are right, most are sub 55 when I am on walk-about. But for 1 in 5, I either have to change the lens, compromise (and crop) or not take the picture. So I am looking to upgrade the 18-55 walk-about lens with something more versatile, for maybe up to £200 plus trade-in of my old lens (so will buy 2nd hand!). Don't want to take lenses with me when I am out and about :-)

Not so bothered about reach beyond 200mm, so happy with my 55-200 VR (but equally, wouldn't settle for less than 200!

What about the 18-135?

I know dpreview might not have fancied the 18-200, but other reviewers find it to be very good. Personally, I found it ok for walking about with... I just didn't do much walking about.

Fromr your posts it does seem like this would best suit your needs. Try one out if you can:thumbs:
