Im looking to upgrade :D

I presently use a Sigma 105mm f2.8 for macro and sometimes portraits

Im considering a Sigma 150mm macro f2.8 or a Sigma 70-200mm f2.8 - which would suit for both subjects???

Are you sure you really want to upgrade Les? Your recent bug shots have been very sharp, so you obviously have a good copy. Do you need the 150mm for more working distance? I'm not convinced you should be looking at the zoom unless you're all macro'd out.

If you're going to buy new and test a few copies then you could maybe consider the zoom as an additional lens - I've also been considering new purchases and have researched the sigmas extensively but I've been far from convinced by their consistancy, to the point I'll probably end up with one of canon's own.

Thanks Mike, I am all macro'd out and the extra reach of the 150mm would be useful and its a cheaper option that the 70 200mm , both being a constant f2.8 they seem to be a very useful addition to my lens collection :lol:

Just not sure what to spend my hard earned on :lol:

The 150mm is the same as the 105mm. You're just further away from the critters...

Take an expensive holiday :D
 
in that case I'd probably dismiss the 150mm due to it being fairly restrictive, and not the best option for portraits, especially on a crop camera.

Therefore it looks like one of the zooms - either the sigma as mentioned, or maybe 50-150mm f2.8 to complement your 150-500mm. Also consider the tamron 70-200 f2.8. I've not used one myself but all the reports claim its sharper than the sigma, albeit a little slower to focus.

Can you keep the 105 & get a new lens or does it have to be a sell 1 to get the other?
The 70-200 won't give you 1:1.
The 150 will add OS, HSM & working distance compared to your existing 105.
& whilst it isn't available in Alpha yet there is the new Tamron 70-200 USD as an alternative to the Sigma 70-200.

Thanks for the reply Scott, I was looking to sell the 105mm - as if I bought the 150mm I wouldnt need to keep it, not a real factor, I have the money stashed :D (£1,000)

I did fancy a 70-200mm f2.8 for people & portraits and maybe keep the 105mm for macro

The OS and working distance of the 150mm or the 180mm macro did appeal though

Had the older 180 M/F. That was pin sharp but only 2/3'rds macro not a 1 to 1.
Have now got a 150mm (non OS) that I'm loving (also Pin sharp) & actually enjoy using it when my 70-200mm VR2 isn't on the body...
This answer may not really help ....:lol:

sounds like the 70-200 + 105 might be the best solution.
Your Sony already stabilises your 105 (albeit any stabilisation either in-body or in-lens at 1:1 is limited), most Macro is done in MF so HSM doesn't bring much (& I've seen it suggested that beasties can detect & react to the ultrasonics) which just leaves the longer working distance as an improvement.
 
No - thank you for the reply Pete- I am leaning towards the 150mm OS version,I did have a look at the 180mm - but now you say its not 1:1 then that s now OFF my list

My thinking too ;) and I really do fancy a 70-200mm f2.8 the 105mm works very well and I always shoot in manual mode in camera and for focusing, still not 100% though - money in pocket and all that lol
