Lens upgrade?

I've been using my 50mm 1.8 For a year now, and after dropping it, it has given up the ghost. It still works on manual, which is great, but I don't tend to take pictures of " stationery" subjects.

So I thought, in line with starting my own business up, why not upgrade?

But after shopping about I'm still baffled. I don't have a massive budget, which is why I bought the 50 to start with. So I am looking for something not too expensive, but better than the lens I've got :)

I have the sigma 50mm 1.4 and the canon 85mm 1.8 and for the money both are fantastic

What camera do you have and what do you want to photograph?

What limitations did the lens have, even when it was working properly?

What system do you use? I was recently considering an upgrade to my 50mm f/1.8 Nikkor AF (the old, screw driven one) which I bought second hand to the relatively new f/1.4 AF-S version and was advised by the salesman that my lens was better, its only disadvantage being the 1/3rd stop. Then again, my D700 has the screw to AF it, yours may not if you use Nikon.
