hi all

im looking to upgrade my gear. ive recently sold my 400d and purchased a 60d, really pleased with this so far and my learning curve has just got steaper!!

im now after a lens upgrade. i have canon EF zoom lens 90-300mm i enjoy using it and its served me well but i want better. until i decided to to upgrade i was a bit un-educated in the cost of a lens. The lens ive been looking at is the same one but in the L and IS range. question is what will i get more for the money. i will be shooting mainly golf with it so is it important or necessary to have the image stabilisor?

Is that your only lens? Do you not have anything in the lower range??
You forget to mention your budget but are looking at L lenses so presume its moderate - have you had a look at the 70-200s? IS is 100% worth the additional cost imo, and if your shooting mostly outside the 'F4 IS' appears to be a good fit for you. You will absolutely notice the difference to your current lens which is optically a bit naff.

whilst your at it get yourself a prime or something in the lower range (1.8 50mm, or even the new 40mm pancake) just so you have a bit more of a walkabout lens that doesnt cost or weigh a ton.

I've got the standard cannon 18-55 mm kit lens. It's ok does its job for walkabout etc but its in my plans to upgrade to a nicer one. I also have a sigma lens 500mm with a x2 converter that also is ok nothing great I don't think but it was given to me second hand not needed by precious owner job.

I think I will have to either hire a lens and have a play or go to a shop for a look. Was thinking about 2nd hand but not sure if its a big risk or not.
 
I had a look at he 70-200mm L versions. Didn't purchase but was advices that the f/2.8 is the one I need not the f/4-5.6 ? As I will be shooting a fair bit of sports. Is this correct or for an amature should I not worry too much about it?
 
If your shooting sports in daylight the f4 will be fine.

If shooting in poor light/evening then the f2.8 is the way to go.
 
^^ this, mostly indoors and your need the f2.8 but outside f4 will be fine. I used the f4 at a paraolympics relay a few months back in the pitch black and it performed fine. Of course your need high ISO but its not exactly the end of the world but shooting in daylight will present zero problems even on overcast days.

one of the reasons for the F2.8 is the DOF which is better at isolating your subject, but it comes with cons - mainly the price and weight!

I would say lose the kit lens though, I really dont like them even as a beginner lens I think they are dire - Even though my next suggestion is a prime I feel you will learn much more and improve considerably with something like a 50mm 1.8.
