hi all im after a general long lens for sport, birds and general widelife shooting!
any ideas which lens woudl be best or a lens and convertor? cheap as possible and ive been looking at canon 400mm any good?
 
You know the Canon 100-400L (I assume you mean this one?) is far from cheap...

What's your budget?
 
Wildlife longer is better allowing you to fill the frame with the subject
Sports fast lenses work better as conditions can be challenging capturing moving objects.

Not really much help as for sports you would be needing 300 or 400mm f/2.8
wildlife 400mm+ the popular choice seems to be the 500mm f/4 due to its weight advantage over the 600mm but neither come cheap.

on a budget then 100-400 or the 400 f/5.6
 
i think its the 400mm 5.6 ive seen, but for a shorter length a guy i work with has a 70-300 2.8 cheap but i want longer really, what about sigma 150-500 or **** i stay with a canon?
theres some 100-400mm canons on ebay fairly cheap

And there is no 70-300 f/2.8. Do you mean the Canon 70-200 f/2.8?

You keep saying cheap, but these sort of lenses can cost over a grand so an idea of budget would give us a chance to make recommendations.

budget i *** say up to 500 ish maybe abit more depending on lens, and sorry i meant 70-200 2.8 sigma
 
I use the Sigma 70-200 f/2.8 EX HSM II and its a superb lens, great for sport as it's super sharp and is very fast to focus.

New they go for just a little more than £500 (amazon best place to get new IMO).

I sometimes use it with an x2 teleconvertor when shooting motorsports and it's very good with the TC as well.
 
what are the sigmas like compared to the canons? *** u stay with canons if you could?

its a little hard trying to choose a lens that will do all the things i want it too do, like long distance for wildlife

Actually thats easy

Choosing a lens for what you want to do on 500 quid is the hard part :)

Any lens with a long focul length on that budget isnt going to produce the best results.... size costs money i am afraid :( a 70-200 has been the best suggestion but its not great for wildlife and it depends what sport you want to cover?
 
In my experience the Sigma 120-400mm is best stopped down to f8, with the Canon 100-400mm being sharper wide open. That said, I'd still stop it down to f7.1 if I could, where it starts to sharpen up nicely.

The 300/4L is way sharper, even at f4, and performs well with a 1.4x TC. But, it has more purple fringing that the zoom. It's not problematic though.

The Sigma 150-500mm is a bargain given the range, but not as sharp as the others.

forgot about that. good call :).. I had a 300mm f4 and it was fantastic.. i would still have it if i hadnt needed the 2.8 version
 
Just bought a 400mm f5.6, its on its way for tuesday delivery!! Read alot of great reviews and *** allow me to get the wildlife shots i want so fingers crossed i made the right choice!! And also spent more then i said ended up been 770
