Lens won't talk to camera - Help still needed!! Please

Just tried to fit my Nikon 50mm 1.4 AF-D back on to my Nikon D90. I get a FEE caption on screen.

Previously it has worked fine. Just prior I have been using it in manual with a micro 4/3 adaptor on my GF1.

I have checked the aperture ring is back in "auto"(f16), all the contacts look fine.

Any ideas please?

(PS the first four replies below paid little attention to my intro!;))

when ever i see people saying there lens dont work the first reply is have you cleaned the contacts so start there
 
Have you got the aperture ringed locked to F/16?

If you have altered the aperture ring it gives a FEE error.
 
Yup, as I said at the start the contacts are fine and the aperture is at the auto setting (f16).

Anything else please?
 
Check that you haven't accidentally bent the aperture tab at the rear of the lens. You might need to compare its position against another, working lens.
 
Something to try. With the camera on, un-lock the lens and very slowly turn it as if you were removing it. It's only a very slight adjustment. My mate has this warning on one of his lens and D90 and this is how he gets around it.

I had this with my D90 and 85mm f/1.8.
There was a tiny bit of play in the lens. If it wasnt quite in the right place it would throw up the FEE.
 
Tenner says the little wiggly tab on the lens isnt taking the little wiggly springy tab on the body fully home, i used to get this on my D3 and old 300mm lens with the aperture ring, it was caused by general wear and meant a trip to Nikon for a free fix to the wiggly tab on the lens if that makes any sense and the tripod foot was cleaned as it was getting sticky to revolve

It always locked fine when mounting the lens but gradually wore down as i flipped the camera from portrait to landscape as there was a big weight from the 300mm lens when turning camera
 
Thanks; measured that and it's the same as other lenses.

I had this problem but with my 70 - 200 lens. Borrowed a lens from a friend and tried that, this worked okay, so conclusion was that the lens was faulty. Went out and bought a new lens and problem rectified.
