Hi,

I have just brought my first dslr which is a canon eos 500d, and it has the 18-55mm lens, but i like taking pictures of landscapes and sport pictures like cricket footy and motorsport and i'm needing a lens that can zoom pretty well and have gd quality but not for silly amounts as i'm only just startin the 2 lens i have found are theses but can anyone say if they have them and what are they like

Canon EF-S 55-250mm f/4-5.6 IS Lens
Canon EF 70-300mm f/4.0-5.6 IS USM Lens
Canon EF-S 55-250mm f/4-5.6 IS Telephoto Zoom AF Lens

What's your budget?
 
1+3 are the same lenses and are probably the best bang for your buck. A lot of good reviews on it.

Canon EF-S 55-250mm f/4-5.6 IS Lens

I have this lens and i'm quite happy with it. It's seriously cheap in comparison to other lenses and is of a good quality to start with for noobies like ourselves :)
 
The 70-300 is the better lens out of the two/three.
 
Hi Guys,

erm not really sure of a budget, but i dont really fanbie spending £300+ really not for the minute, if i get in to photography more than maybe but from the sounds of things everyone is recommending the Canon EF-S 55-250mm f/4-5.6 IS Lens,

has anyone got any sportiing pictures that are taken with this lens to give me an idea of the zoom and quality

If you can afford the 70-300 then go or that. Its much better for sports!

Its better IQ, better build quality, longer focal range (which is important for sports) an to top it off it has a USM for quick an near silent autofocus.

The 55-250 is great for the money but not a patch on the 70-300 in terms of quality and usability.

Go into a shop and have a play with both of them, you'll know the difference before you even examine an image.

Well. For just to begin with it will be not very important. But true that USM focus will give advantage. Just go to shop, try to use few minutes. You will feel it.

Maybe go with short time investment, take 55-250, that is cheaper. Pay more attestation on practice rather then technology. If you skills progress quickly then you will see limitations and obviously go for L series :) It will be costy, and serve you for ages. But by that time you already know what and why exactly you need.

Another thing 55-250 is EF-S lens. So it will fit only Cropped sensor camera. If you buy full sensor 5D, then you can't use EF-S lenses with it. If later you plan to upgrade to full size sensor, avoid collect EF-S lenses.

Surely not a serious thing to consider at the moment? The chap's only just got his hands on a 500D and is wary of spending too much on the next lens.

I suspect a 5D is not exactly on his wish list at present.

EF-S lens are ideal for your 500D.

You can always sell them later down the line, as and when your needs & wants change :)
 
haha yeh i guessed that but thansks for the help guys, think i'm goin to check out the local shops this week, and then c what deals i can find on the internet, would anyone buy from ebay if it looks safe and gd feedback etc

It depends how much i was saving. I prefer amazon because it feels safer if anything goes wrong.

I've found recently that independent shops will get very close to amazon prices when you ask them. For them a sale at a discounted price is better than no sale.

I wouldn't buy from abroad on eBay but that's just me. And I also find that peoples opinion of second hand condition can vary a lot so if I ever buy used I always get it from a shop so I can feel it in real life first.

Almost all the photos currently on my flickr were taken with the 55-250mm. The ones with the cars especially. they're not bad, but could be better as due to so much dust it was really hard to focus ! but it may give you an idea..

The 55-250 is an excellent lens, some of my best motorsport shots were taken with one of these.

And it's beautifully packedged so small and light for a 250mm lens with IS, and pin sharp IQ at all apertures and at all focal lengths. I sold mine a while ago as I PX'd it against another lens and I really wish I could have kept it.

I'll post some shots up later.

thanks guys for the help. yeh i never buy from any other countries anyway so thats not a problem and yeh i have noticed amazon looks like a better deal lol, how do u look at ** flickr pictures lol,
