Hi I'm new to talk photography. I'm looking to buy a new lens for sort of all round kind of lens for things like private partys, christenings, weddings that sort of thing i'm using the 18-55 kit lens. i did a wedding at the wekend as the unofficial photographer but i did like the photos as they just not crisp enough. I'm really in to sports but i no ill get asked to do other things like the party stuff. So dilemar is that ive been told to get the
Canon EF-S - Zoom lens - 17 mm - 85 mm - f/4.0-5.6 IS USM or the
Sigma 18-50mm DC f:2.8 EX Lens

if anybody has views on these 2 lens or can offer me any other lens i would be gratefull.
P.S i have about £350ish to spend

Cheers

Scottie

I occasionaly lust after the 17-85 IS, as two of my other lenses are 28-135 IS, and 70-300 IS, it would give me IS across a full range. I have/will sent a PM to a couple of raw files I took with the 28-135 IS.
I use this lens almost all the time at weddings. Unfortunately, one particular shot is at 800 ISO, which the 400d doesn't do too well, but might give you an indication as to how sharp/soft it is on my camera.
The IS does appear to be good, I am really stretching the bounds of hand-held on these.
Cameraprice buster showed the lens as £337

I would have thought something fast would be the way to go. The Sigma with its F2.8 sounds like the right kind of thing (I have no idea on this particular lens though). Otherwise you could look at a 50mm f1.4 or another prime.

Although as you already have the kit lens (obviously) covering the shorter lengths, perhaps the money might be better spent on a flash (430ex?) or a longer lens to increase your flexibility?
