If you're going to use it on a Canon, and want an autofocus lens, both Sigma and Tamron are very highly regarded.

If money is no object and you're willing to give up autofocus, the Carl Zeiss lenses are regarded as the mut's nuts.

and it's lens not lens!

There is probably not an answer to that question as it changes by lens, you may find for a 30 that Sigma are best but for a lens with large range Tamron may be best etc,.

I think that what's "best" would vary at different price points, focal lengths and apertures.

Whoever makes the best 50mm f1.4 may not make the best 70-200mm f2.8.

You gotta pick and choose IMVHO.

Nikon would never be the answer, because Canon is next best to Nikon, not the other way round.

next best to Canon, i would say Sigma, their HSM and OS are pretty good.
