Hi, Fairly new to photograph and currently have a 450d with EFS 17-85 . I’m now looking for something with extra length
but cant decided what to get (too much choice) :(

I’m looking to shoot mainly wildlife, motorsport and landscapes but can’t see to decide which lens to go for.
I’m leaning more towards the EF 70-200 F4.0L USM , but not sure if I would miss the length from say a sigma
70-300mm f/4-5.6 or one of the canon 300mm lenses.

Budget is around £500 but can stretch it for a more suited lens , so I was wondering what your views were ?
 
EF 70-200L f/4 is a great lens ........... sharp as a razor .......... could maybe squeeze up to the IS version for your type of shooting .... but go for that one IMHO gives you a bit more variation. The EF 300 f/4L is also a great lens and if you add the 1.4 extender you can get the extra length, but if I were you, I would go for the 70-200L f/4 IS ........... it,s a cracker ........
 
Definately the 70-200mm F4.
If you can stretch maybe go for a 1.4x extender if you miss the reach?
 
There is also the Canon EF 70-300mm f/4.0-5.6 IS USM. Not as good quality as the 70-200 f4L, but a fair bit more reach and cheaper.

Is it the Sigma 70-300mm f/4-5.6 DG OS you're talking about? I suspect daugirdas is talking about the non-OS APO DG version, which (along with the equivalent Tamron) I'd steer clear off. The OS version might be better, but I don't know anything about it - hopefully someone else will be along soon with some experience of it. :)
 
70-200 and then get a 1.4 converter if you need. That's what I use, and I rarely need extra reach for sports on a crop body.

I have this lens and would recommend it. Not as sharp as the 70-200 f4L, but great value for money.
