lenses for caribbean wildlife

Hi – lenses for Caribbean trip – my primary interest is wildlife – birds mostly, but also insects. What lenses would you recommend I take. I was thinking that with the birdlife out there, a 500mm would be an absolute must, but would that be too much in certain situations, particularly in a rainforest where light is at a premium, and handheld shooting might be more practical. In this situation would a shorter focal length be more useful, as well as something with an aperture of perhaps 2.8? For instance would a 300 2.8 with converters be a better lens to take than a 500?

A 100mm macro will definitely come with me, as well as a flash. Any other thoughts appreciated, for instance would you take a tripod or a monopod? Much as I would like to take EVERYTHING, it will be hot, sticky and, at times, wet, and I don’t want to be lugging a massive amount.

Lucky you! I went to Antigua for honeymoon 5 years ago before I had a dslr and there were humming birds right outside the balcony!!
I wouldn't of thought you'd need anything to long 300mm but that's just me! Sure someone else may help more...
