I own a Nikon D40X and I want to get a large zoom lens, I'm rather new to this so I don't know what to look for, I would like something that can take clear crisp action shots at a long distance, so any help would be really appreciated. Thanks

You'll need to look for a lens with an inbuilt focus motor to match your D40x

Nikon brand this AF-S, Sigma HSM

You're maybe looking at this 70-300mm or an earlier version if there is one with the motor.

Alternatively this Sigma lens (Canon fit linked, I assume there's a Nikon version) has a bit less reach but is cheaper. Don't know how it rates.

Neither is especially 'fast' meaning you'll be dependent on very good light for the best shots.

like the above said you'll need to have it with AF-S or HSM plus a wad of cash to get a decent lens.

How's your budget for this?

:plusone:

you can buy a good Nikon 70-300 mm AF-S "VR" here [£300?]
or a 55-200mm VR for about £130

the AF-S means it has an "internal" motor for focusing on your D40X
the "VR" is Nikons term for Vibration Reduction which makes an improvement on longer lens

just a note.........
the addition of a zoom bigger/heavier than a 55-200 VR will make the smaller body D40X seem front heavy

I bought a Sigma 17-70mm f2.8 - a heavy lens - for my D40 and it felt front heavy - I added a battery grip and the camera was "balanced" again

if you dont mind buying non-Nikon

have a look at the Sigma 70-300mm APO HSM......."here"

good reviews - motor for Nikon body -- MAKE SURE you buy the APO version - better quality

OK the Nikon 70-200 - the good, fast ones, are about $1,600US, so that's them out...
Anything shorter than a 70-200 and to be honest, you're wasting your time and money if you want to shoot sports...you say 'action-shots', but it's the same principles at work...you need fast shutter-speeds to freeze the movement and to do that in anything other than glorious sunshine you kind of need 'fast' lenses...

You might have to buy second-hand for that money... the older 80-200 f/2.8 should be well within your $800 budget...shop around...

"Blacks" in Winnipeg = $550
