Lesson1: Always carry a tripod!

Unlucky Richard. I think all of us will learn that lesson at some point. I certainly have!
 
EXIF on your Flickr says 1/1000 at f/9 and 1250 ISO at 110mm. If that's accurate, then you should have been able to shoot at 200 ISO or lower pretty easily unless you were in a hurricane at the time, or I'm missing something?

Absolutely, but back to the point, this is a simple scene and I have used my backpack as a beanbag a few times to support the camera.

Nice shot - always used to put the camera on a rock with 2 sec self timer, prop the lens end up with your phone/another small rock
 
I have been in the same situation so many times - I spent the other night wandering london at sundown, without a tripod and a roll of velvia :shock:

Nice shot though, I like the parallel lines in the cloud and ridge
 
yes a nice shot.. still have to ask if info above is correct why 1/1000 though?
