Yes
Where is the best place to book some lessons in Photography? would it be at a college or privately - if so what do I need to look for.

After todays session, I really think it has got to be kill or cure, either take the bull by the horns or give up totally:shrug:

College. Group-learning really does bring the creative juices to the fore...

Whatever you do don't give up.

By all means consider a evening class.

Look in any photo mag and there are plenty of courses, however see if you can meet up with some people from here near you, to practice on whatever you feeel needs improvement.

What is the problem today anyway apart from being Thursday?

Bloody focussing issues again I have the most great opportunities and just seem to c**k them up with my camera, can't seem to get any decent shots.:(

Is the tutor offering positive reinforcement in the form of DiNozo-style NCIS headslaps?
It worked for me...
Get it wrong - get a slap...pretty soon you stop getting it wrong - or fall into a coma...whatever; it's all good...

Ah a rack door when I was in training.
"What happened?"
"Ah he walked into a rack door..."

Briony,

I think most of us hgave bad days or even weeks sometime, though that may just be me....

Try posting some of the shots you are unhappy with along with some that you are happy with on the forum and ask for peoples help and opinions.

This has helped my photography no end, though it is a bit gutting when you post a shot you are really happy with to have people find fault in it, but you then notice the faults yourself and learn from it.

Remember that no one is right, take some comments with a pinch of salt and try not to take anything too seriously or to heart.

John.

Ah another NCIS fan plus that female CGIS agent headslapping her assistant last week.

Depends on what bit of Oxford you're in but I can totally recommend these guys.

I did one of their evening courses over 10 weeks and it totally helped with my photography. Went from scoring nothing to coming 5th in TP photographer of the year, winning national comps etc.

Hmmm...you have indeed back-focussed it...

*SLAP!*

What does that mean? (no, not the slap:lol:) Is it focussing behind the subject, if so how did I do that when I focussed on the point of subject - see there is no hope for me.

Can't even get this in focus today:shrug:

When you took this shot, were you using auto focus or manual?

If you were using auto, do you know which of the red spots in the view finder are being used to identify the area you want to focus on?

Also, did you know that you can half press the shutter button to set the focus, and then as long as you don't let go of the button you can then recompose your shot...

Auto and I only had the one spot up so focussed on that. Should I have had all of them up? Yep tried the manual also, so held the button down till it beeped to focus then recomposed then took the shot and even those were all rubbish, just today is a rubbish day for me!

You have Jays, will be looking at my roster tonight Nicki, will see when I can get down to you, Kites, Buzzars and Jays, a Jay is high on my list.

Single piont would be best, try focusing on the eye with the red dot, keep the shutter half pressed and recompose the shot.

Jays are very few and far between and these were from the hide, I had 2 today but not seen them before.

What does that mean? (no, not the slap:lol:) Is it focussing behind the subject, if so how did I do that when I focussed on the point of subject - see there is no hope for me.

Yes: The apparent sharp point of focus is marginally behind the bird - looking at the grass-blades. If it were in front of the subject it would be 'front-focussed'...
The eye is definitely not the sharpest it could be. It only needs to be a tiny fraction out with this kind of subject as well... It also looks like it was shot wide-open on a long-ish lens, so really, you're making life difficult for yourself.

Go back to basics and practice on easier subjects - people...ones that will stay still for you to practice on.
Then at least you'll know that you can do it right and that it'll get easier with more practice.

That is what I did, by recompose you mean re focus right?

Nope - re-composing is focussing on a point then moving the camera so that the composition changes but not the point of focus...

 told you I should give up as there is no hope

Not quite, keeping the shutter button half pressed in one shot focus keeps the focus that locked, recomposing is to get the composition you want. That way you have focused on the eye, but can get the shot you want.

Aghhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhh:bang::bang::bang::bang::bonk:

Organise a TP meet at wherever the hide is. Bring cakes and you will get some help

Jays kites and buzzards will help too.
