Taken on Saturday a couple of shots of what I think is a Four-spotted chaser ( Libellula quadrimaculata )

All taken on Canon 50D - Canon 100mm Macro Lens, ISO100 F8 with flash from twin macro flash.

WOW! How do you macro types get them to stay still?

Patience. And with these they often return to the same spot to bask. So a bit of observation and approaching slowly and low mean sometimes you get lucky for them to stay still.

Also I should point out, I've ID'd it wrong - it's in fact a Scarce Chaser.

Im just starting down this road Chris, fantastic looking dragonfly. I would be over the moon to achieve this.

nice well exposed photos, to nitpick on things (not to be taken seriously, these are great photos) maybe on the first the background is a little underexposed, and the wing detail that is infront of the twig/branch isnt as clear as the rest, in the second shot, only improvement I can suggest would have been if the whole insect was in focus tip to tip
