light line top of pic

Sticky shutter curtain probably. Looks like it's struggling to accelerate up to speed at the start of exposure.

It could also be a a problem with the AA filter if it's moved at all.
 
It's shutter-bounce.

When second curtain hits the buffers at the bottom of it's travel (image is inverted, so that's top of the picture) it bounces back a fraction, causing additional exposure.

The amount of bounce is roughly fixed, therefore it will be more noticeable at higher shutter speeds.

cheers hoppy.. so again you wouldnt envisage any other side effects... really need it over next 2 weeks.. then send back.. obvious question from you is.. do i notice any.. nope.. but..

It's not a good sign, but perhaps more an indication that the shutter needs adjustment rather than being on the way out. 1DX is rated at 300k actuations isn't it? I know you shoot a lot but the camera is still newish.

It's actually quite common. I have a well used Nikon D700 with a similar but opposite problem - top of frame is sometimes fractionally darker. Which I think is the first curtain bouncing back.

It certainly needs fixing when you can. Not sure how much adjustment there is on modern shutters, so they might just replace the whole unit.
 
9 months old... 200k actuations :) and I can trace the fault back to april.. i dont have any older originals i dont think

Then it's unlikely to fail in the next five minutes I guess.

If others have also experienced this, and it's happening with quite new cameras, that suggests a design weakness and Canon will have fixed that, so a new shutter or revised parts in your 200k unit might turn out to be a handy result :thumbs:

new shutter.. yes please :)
 
due to a change in jobs I need to send this on monday.. tommorow.. next week is my only clear week (got jobs but) where i dont need two cameras or an indoor low light job... 1st july on mon and i must have it for 10th..as a platinum member of cps this should be doable...i need it back for a play i have been commisioned to photo.. then its pre season football weekends and midweek.. must have 2 bodies..

problem is.. i am a bit minddfull of the recall and how busy they are with all the units going back :(

With Platinum membership Tony, you're entitled to a temporary replacement body (free) if they can't turn it around within 3 days....that's how it works here in France and I'm sure that the UK is the same as the system is Pan-European.

It's not the shutter. Catching the shutter results in underexposure or a hard edged black area if you actually manage to freeze it.

I don't think it's the mirror(s) not moving entirely out of the way either because they are in blackened frames/carriers.

Are these raw images? I know some Nikons had an issue with bands etc in Jpeg captures with certain settings.

If it is a raw capture then I would have to suspect it's the sensor/electronics.

Symptoms exactly match the character of second-curtain shutter bounce.
 
Is the original a Tiff file. I know the D800 used to put a purple coloured fringe up the R/H side on small Tiff's (now corrected with the latest firmware).......maybe Canon has an issue under certain circumstances.

I only shoot JPG and I am pretty sure its not any of the recent suggestions... we will know this week as its going in tomorrow :)
 
Don't you know you should only shoot raw then spend an age converting?:p

Hope you get your shutter sorted ASAP (or at least a free loaner while yours gets dealt with!).
 
Ouch! Shouldn't that be refundable since it's a warranty claim? I've just registered a Fuji for a warranty repair and they're sending me prepaid packaging.

Sue raw? Has she got big.... files?!
 
Got a reciept from canon this aft... warranty fix no problem... i dont suppose i will know whats wrong until i get it back and see what work they have done.. fingers crossed for a new shutter (bonus!) or just a re alignment of some gubbins probably..

if they got today then three day turnaround for platinum starts tommorow tue... as such it should be coming back on thur for friday delivery.. fingers crossed :)

Not really, because if you catch the shutter it always results in underexposure. And that's really more of a flash/lighting issue.
A slow 2nd curtain will result in the whole image being overexposed...Bounce makes sense but I've never actually seen it or known anyone who has. (I suppose you could call bounce "catching" the shutter opening back up)

For anyone who hasn't seen it before here's an interesting video of a 5D's internals moving around... You can see the mirror(s) bouncing around and the 2nd shutter curtain rippling with the impact.

canon just phoned me.. due to high amount of work my camera isnt coming back this weekend.... loan camera on its way ....love this cps thing :)

Out of interest it looks like the warranty is one year on the 1Dx.

Canon Bob if I remember correctly says in France it's 2 years.

Isn't there some European law that states it's 2 years on Electrical items?

I dont think they even looked at it yet.. and on past experience i wont know until I get it back with paperwork... still got fingers crossed for new shutter... took the loan out last night to a T20 match.. suprising how you just clcik away without a care in the world.. must have took a thousand shots machine gunnign away.....not mine haha :)
 
It's 2 years Canon warranty here + an extra 2 years from the dealer (but handled through Canon).

well dissapointingly the loan camera is pants :( every now and then it loses the ability to focus on anyhting and just hunts.. in broad daylight.. even if i manual focus to somehting to get it started it still cant focus... turn off/on doesnt work... then starts working again...

only did it every couple of hrs so i want bothered until it did it on a high ball at cricket and i missed the catch...

glad its not my camera :(

its had 73k clicks so a lot less than mine 003099000285 firmware 1.2.4

I loaded my settings in so its nothing different set.
 
Ah that's a Yorkshire model so won't work properly in your neck of the woods.
Be interesting to see if you keep having problems with it.

Weirdly enough a mate of mine has had exactly the same problem as this with two different bodies. 1st one he had went back to canon a couple of times, still wasn't fixed then they gave him a new one, this has the same prob. Frankie was saying he was just unlucky!

He hasn't sent it in for the recent fix so don't know if that will do anything to sort it.

Incidentally when I took mine into fixation I said to the girl behind the desk it was for the recall fix & she said oh the AF fix? not sure if that was just a mistake or they're doing more than they say.
I have never had any probs. with mine.

It is an AF fix in that it's the AF that gets screwed up by dust from the poorly lubricated mechanism.
