light meter help

Hiya guys i been using off camera flash for some time now and have never got round to using a flash meter / light meter.

I dont realy understand how these work with flashes i am using catuts v2s to trigger my 430ezs and was wondering how this works with a light meter?

Basicly how do you get the light meter to trigger the flashes i understand that there is sync ports on the meter that then would connect to what?

I am a lilttle confused by this and wondering if its worth me getting one or not as i am finding myself taking alot of natural light photos atm

if you have a sync port on the trigger, you can plug the trigger into the light meter. failing that, the one i have has a flash setting, you hold the button and trigger the lights and it reads the brightest i think. not used that bit though

no sync port on the trigger sadly i was thinking of getting the sekonic l-308s dose any one know if you can meter flash with this without conecting it to a sync port?
