I’m trying my hand at more portrait photography and have decided to invest in a light meter, new or second hand, looking at spending no more than £150, is this a realist price for a decent one?

Hi, I've used a "Gossen Lunasix F" meter professionally for many years. They can measure both ambient or flash, reflected or incident light readings. They have been around for a long time now and are one of the finest most versatile light meters ever made. There are currently three of them for sale on ebay well below £150-00.

I picked up a used Polaris 6710 digital flash meter for about £55 and its been spot on... Does all the above, meters to 1/10th of a stop. I'd be inclined to buy a decent entry level meter for £50 - 80 quid and keep the rest for books and putting towards expanding your light modifier collection.

Most portrait photographers I know use the L308S, I use a Gossen Variosix F2 as it also does spot, which is what I use most often.

Be aware a lot of meters only measure in TV or EV mode and not AV. No big deal, but just in case you didn't realise
I use an old Minolta Autometer III, does the job although the newer IV is still very popular despite its age
