This would probably be best in the Lighting and Studio section, but the sekonic 308 is a good basic light meter

I dont think spot metering and matrix metering modes apply to light meters i think these are just camera based. The 308 reads ambient or flash exposures in either reflected or incident modes

I got this http://www.sekonic.com/Products/L-398A/Overview.aspx and works perfect, and you do need to read the manual and light metering in general to get the best of it. Currently playing with it 
Basically, Set the desired ISO, take an incident reading of the light or reflected reading. . set the dials and it sets the recommended aperture and shutter speed. As you use it more you learn how to compensate. Sekonic have classrooms which are very informative. check their website
There are other brands and more sophisticated meters, depending how much you want to pay or play

The advantage of separate meters is that they can generally be used for both ambient light and flash, and for both reflected and incident light.
Some can be used for sport metering; generally the more expensive ones, but AFAIK, there is no seperate meter that offers matrix /evaluative metering patterns. The standard is effectively an average pattern.

thanks for the feedback! lets say I want to take a landscape shot, but I would want to meter the light coming from a lamp post and not the surroundings. Will the sensonic L308 do fine?
What I do now is just use my DSLR on spot metering and get the settings before I use similar settings on my film SLR.

You'll want a spot meter for that, unless you can physically run to the lamp post and take an incident reading, not really viable if it is some distance from the camera.
I use a Gossen Variosix F2 as it does flash as well as spot, incident and reflective. Just be aware that you'll need to buy the spot attachment separately with some meters, such as this one.
