Generally it's quite dark or dull for storms so just use a small aperture and low ISO to force a longer shutter - then cable release shoot locked on continuos and you'll catch the flash in one of the frames

Set exposure so that it's approximately correct for say 5 seconds shutter speed. Continuous shooting mode, then just press the button and wait. You won't miss much that way. Also a good technique for fireworks.

In my experience you want either a night time storm, or at least the end or beginning of the day for there to be a nice dark background for some contrast, then, as the others say, a long exposure to catch the strikes.

That is the technique I used for these in Croatia recently
