Lighting a portrait shoot.

Hi All,

I have recently bought myself a Canon 500D which is my first DSLR camera and treated myself to a 50mm f1.8 lens as I got told this is a decent lens for portraiture.

So what I ask is what are some good lighting positions to get interesting portrait shots?

Thanks

Ok sorry yes I should have elaborated a little. I am going to be doing a shoot with an elderley gentleman at his home, so he would be sat in his armchair in his living room.

Would I be best using natural light from a window and use a reflector or use 2 sidelights (softboxes) and a backlight? I am just looking for some creative ideas that would really do the subject justice, if anyone can help?

Thanks

Why don't you try both and see which you prefer? Natural light from one side could give a gritty feel whilst a more highly lit version could give a soft and sympathetic feel.
