I'm tryin to set up a studio for semi pro's high quality low hire cost, but want to know of any good courses on lighting . And what would you say was a good rate 15hr plus model . 2k 3k on the studio . thanks:bonk:
 
I'm a bit confused. Are you asking what's the good rate for a studio? Good rate to hire out to others? Or good rate for model?

You have £2000-3000 to spend

You are setting up a studio in order to hire it out to other people and want some training so that you know how to do the lighting too.

??

I would suggest that if the studio is being hired out then you might need to spend more than £2000-3000 on equipment or was that including changing the use of the room to be a studio?

Take a moment to write out your questions in full sentences that make sense to anyone that might reply and I'm sure you will be provided with some very good advice.

Ok there are no studios near me that i think are cheap enough for the normal guy who would like to take decent studio shots. I would just charge by the hour, for the studio. would 3k fund this type of studio ? Models, well they would be a extra at there cost. unless i tried a glam shoot and see how many came, could do with going on a few courses on studio lighting its ok playing but knowing your stuff has got to be the key. cheap studio is my goal but not cheap quality any advice welcome

I think that you have just thought of this idea, have done absolutely zero research and are hoping a long thread here with the help of others and it will be a success?

I've got 45k to invest to be honest but i was looking at the the camera club guy. they don't want to spend silly money

Ask yourself why! Studios cost a lot to set up and run and you have to get a return on that time and investment.
 
you can have a studio full when its cheap, but empty when expensive surely ? this is for the normal guy not someone who thinks hes a pro.
 
yeah - I could work 24 hours a day if I was cheap - but who wants to do that?
 
It'll take a lot longer to recoup 45K at £15 per hour!
 
my friend has a unit for free lol lucky me lol so thats what i want to find out what light system could i get for 3k surely ok for mr normal

Does this unit have changing rooms, toilets etc? If not you'll need to add them. Does "free" include rates and electricity?

Equipment-wise, if you're setting up a "pro" studio you'll need decent gear, not a set of £200 Ebay lights and £3k won't go far in buying that kind of stuff.

You could have a look at Lencarta's stuff, but even there you'll struggle to buy much and remember you need at least TWO of everything...

You've told us you have a unit you can use for free and £3k to spend.

What size is the unit?
What facilities are available at the unit?
What is the location of the unit like?
Are you hoping to run the studio as a business to give you a decent living?
Are you just wanting to set up a glorified home studio for people to use very cheaply because they haven't got the luxury of a home studio?

If you read between the lines, are we helping you explain what it is that you need / want

I am converting a garage into a studio. The garage I already own. I have just spent £500 on wood etc just to get the shell right and build in a very small changing room (and remember my garage is far smaller than a studio needs to be). I have priced up lighting and using Lencarta stuff the lighting I would need for a basic studio is £1300 so I am having to buy it in bits.

The reason that people are being rather negative is that the amount you are talking about for kit just will not cut it. You are looking at maybe £5K using Lencarta stuff.

How much do you want to hit as a target £15 per hour. Is this place unmanned? Who is going to be there for the customers? If it is you then that is not much of a wage.

People have just looked at your idea and can see straight away that it just will not work.

What you would need is:

  1. a unit preferably 12-15 feet high, 40 feet square (as a pro studio you really do need space)
  2. probably 5 x 600watt lights - spares
  3. 3 each of 4 different style soft boxes (including spares) / Brollies?
  4. barn doors, gels, other light modifiers etc
  5. Changing room(s)
  6. Advertising
  7. Toilets
  8. Simple kitchen facilities (kettle etc)
  9. Insurance (public, employer? and equipment).
  10. Running costs - Rates, electricity, water, kitchen?, toilets etc
  11. Electrics setup right
  12. Decorated right
  13. Props?

Ram,

I've just PMd Garry from Lencarta. He will be able to give you an idea of cost seeing as how he works for Lencarta AND runs a studio
