Lightroom 2.0 - Run from removeable drive?

Hi,

As the ever aging problem of space hit my computer the other week I decided I would move my 30GB Catalogue from the main HDD to a removeable drive.

This worked fine and in the preferences I changed the "When Starting use Catalogue" to the new path for the removable drive... O.K Great I thought. It all worked. - When I started Lightroom all my photos were there and it was clearly running from the removeable drive since I removed all the Cats from the main C:/ drive saving myself lots of space -

Unfortunately, this doesn't work as planned, as for NEW imports the photos are still imported into the Main HDD (e.g. C:/ drive) under the same and now new Duplicate 2009 Cat. :bang:

My issue is how can I change this? I would like to run Lightroom and store photos directly on my removable drive - I am considering installing Lightroom on the removable drive but not sure if this would work?

The other issue I have now is that if I were to try and almagamate the two, I have a really bad feeling the new Cat. file in the C:/ drive with last import photos will overwrite the exisiting 30Gb every photo I have!!!!.... :shake:

What the hell can I do now?

You need to change the settings in the Import dialogue to import the images to their new location.

Are the images being imported into a new catalog? Or just the old file structure? I suspect they are being imported into the old file structure, so you can move these across to the new one for the file browser within the Lightroom Library module.

Hmmm,

Are the images being imported into a new catalog? Or just the old file structure?

1. Well, whats happening is they are being imported into a new strcture - new 2009 Cat folder on my C:/ HDD... which I had removed (Moved) to my removeable drive K:/ so now I have two 2009 Cats, one on C:/ new import, one on K:/ with every photo up to that point.

2.What I would like, and I think you might have hit the nail on the head is for the new imports to go to and ADD to the new K:/ removeable each time, but as you have said looks like I need to specify.

I am a bit concerned I'm gonna lose a lot of photos here, so I'll back the K:/ cat up at another location and give it go.

Thanks

Catalogs and file structures aren't the same thing. Can you see both old and new images in Lightroom?

FWIW you shouldn't really move anything that is referenced by Lightroom unless you do it from within Lightroom.
