Lightroom camera profiles

So this is a bit of a convoluted question but I used to use capture one but I can’t justify the price so I have crawled back to Lightroom.
For all my black and white I use nik silver fx and for all my colour I use mastin labs Kodak pack. Unless it’s a landscape.

So when in capture one under the drop down where you can select the in camera profiles, for Fuji velvia, provia etc) it also had a neutral option. I forget what it was called, maybe it was called flat?) but essentially it’s the raw photo with no profile applied. They look terrible but they have the best base to use the Mastin land and silver fx.

On Lightroom this profile doesn’t seem to exist. It’s not the end of the world but it is a pain, but means I have to quite drastically reduce the contrast and vibrancy of every colour photo after the Mastin preset is applied. Black and white works well but can still be over contrasty.

Does anyone know if there is anything hidden in lightrooms settings that does the same thing? I may end up email Mastin labs but I’m surprised there isn’t this option in Lightroom

You should be seeing an Adobe Neutral in the profile drop-down list, but that still isn't all that flat. If you click on the four-square icon beside the profile field you should get a list of Creative profiles, which might have a flatter option.

I find all the Adobe options too contrasty and saturated, and I have added linear profiles to LR, but I would be surprised if Mastin Labs need this to work as intended. Maybe you have just got used to the results you have been getting from C1.

In Capture One, the film emulations "For Fuji only" are in the curve options and the files listed are the curves Fuji led the development on.

The non Fuji options in the list are:

Auto (this automatically selects the Fuji film emulation you used in the camera)

The following three are the options that C1 offered before they teamed up with Fuji, and developed entirely by C1.

Film standard
Linear
The linear is the flattest and is my starting point in C1, as I find it easier to add contrast than take it away. Not everyone likes to work that way

You need to go through the payment system as that is how Tony sends them out, but there is no charge.

Once you have them, you can tell LR to automatically load them when you open a file.

This might be worth a try, if you can't get the results you want from LR.

I think it might be a Fuji issue. I used to have the Sony a6000 and didn’t have this problem. It also has the Fuji “worm” issue unless you remove all sharpening within Lightroom. Unless I go back to capture 1 it’s making me think about going back to Sony to be honest.

I've had several attempts at giving up C1 and I have never stopped dabbling with LR, which I've had since version 1, along with C1 since version 6. I'm paying Adobe to use Photoshop, so I effectively have lR for free, and would love to get out of paying for C1.

I used LR only for six months in 2024, which meant creating a new workflow around LR, but in spite of the ever increasing prices of C1, every time I try to make the switch, it just convinces me I cannot give up C1. Lightroom is a very competent program, and financially I may well be forced to use it one day, but I'm putting it off as long as possible.

Are you still getting a worm issue with the current version of LR? I thought it was fixed.

Yeah it appears to be there still. I’ll double check the updates but I looked at some old photos yesterday and I could still see it. I don’t if it’s because im using the older xt2? Didn’t they move away from the x trans sensor lately, I think it was the x trans that was causing the problems.
In any case it’s only really obvious if you use sharpening which I rarely do, if anything I add a little bit of grain to soften the edges a tad. If I want sharpening I tend to use the Nik output sharpener which doesn’t show the work effect.

I prefer Lightroom for 1 thing and that’s how it integrates with Flickr. I use Flickr as a 2nd place to edited jpegs so being able to send them to Flickr straight from Lightroom is really nice. Plus the Flickr photo is forever linked to the Lightroom photo so any future edits update the photo on Flickr.

But other than that I prefer capture 1. I’m locked into Lightroom for another 9 months I think. I decided I’ll give it a year and see how I get on but I didn’t realise how much I relied on the linear profile.
I don’t think I can justify £26 a month for capture 1 though. I don’t use my cameras as much as I did, it’s usually just holidays and the occasional days out that warrant bringing a camera.

Some of the cheaper Fujis are using standard bayer sensors and the GFX are also using standard Bayer sensors (but there are no advantages of using Xtrans with larger sensors.

The integration with Flikr is useful, but Glass integration with Capture One works well, and as a place to display photographs Glass seems much nicer than Flikr, but not as versatile.

I would download the linear profiles from Tony Kuyper and give them a try.

TP members on Glass.

This is a collation of Glass.photo pages owned by TP members and mentioned in this thread. It's not intended as a long-term resource, (I don't plan on keeping it going for ever!) but I thought it might be useful feature while members are trying out and learning about Glass.

I assume, that once someone wants to publicise their Glass,photo site properly, they will add a link to it in their signature.

I'm not sure what you are referring to hear. If its Capture One, they have three versions, which are essentially the same, but with added features and increased prices. Mine is the Pro version, but there is also an "all in one" that has Ipad support, and the studio version that has some specialist tools for e-commerce photography. There is also a Culture and Heritage version, which seems to be a bit of a secret and a license is in the thousands.

But unless you have one of the more expensive versions, they haven't increased the prices as much as you are paying.

C1 has traditionally been much more expensive than Lightroom as it had a narrow customer base of professional photographers, and other than Phase One cameras, they only supported a small number of "professional" grade DSLRs.

It was designed as a replacement for ACR (LR didn't exist), but it slowly added features, and by the time LR arrived, it was more like a cut-down LR, than ACR. But this was fine because it was when everyone used a third-party DAMs, and C1 was just a pathway to Photoshop. There has always been an assumption at C1, that users also use Photoshop, though recently they have mentioned Affinity and Photoshop as "companions" to C1.

The focus of the company was on professionals, and the technical support was the best you could get. But, as time went by, they added features to chase Lightroom, but equally were adding features that left LR well behind.

With the popularity of Fuji and LR having problems processing it, and with Adobe going subscription-only, there was an obvious change in the customer base, and C1 became popular to amuch wider user base. C1 obviously saw a way of increasing sales by becoming more of a mass market product, but this tended to dilute their professional focus.

They have now clearly changed back to trying to be an expensive niche product for professionals, and I suspect we will see continued price increases. The CEO has already referred to "annual" price increases.

I always create my own profile... it's actually a preset.
Start by opening an image with whatever base profile you want to use. Then apply any default edits you want to apply to all images (baseline clarity, sharpening, calibration, etc, etc); and save that as a new preset.



Then set that preset as your defualt for imported images in the preferences.



Then when you import an image it has the desired profile AND base edits already applied.
