Lightroom/hard drive problem?

I'm having a mproblem with lightroom; it seems to lock up every time I open it. At first I put this down to the size of the images I was getting from my new 5D mk2, but I'm not really sure.

When it does lock up have to turn the computer off and then on again.

As well as that I can't defrag the hard disk, I just get the message that there is corrupted file which is identified as being in my antivirus program (kaspersky)

Now the big question is....

I'm about to transfer all my software, files etc onto a new PC.

Should I try to sort the problem(s) before hand, or see if the transfer sorts them?

First of all would try checking for errors on the drive Right click on drive > Properties > Tools Tab if this finds and fixes anything try defrag again, if the same error occurs try un installing kapersky and re installing

Ps When you say transfer software. how are you doing this? do you mean install the software and then transfer your data over?

start -> run

type: cmd (press return)

in the black box type: chkdsk c: /r (press return)

if asked to schedule on next reboot press Y and restart the computer.

that should route out any disk issues.

Neil,

I tried that when you originally suggested it a couple of weeks ago, but nothing seemed to happen....should I assume that it has checked the disk and found nothing amiss?

I'm just going to transfer everything over if I can, whatever it takes to do it with the least hassle. Presumably it should be easy with w7?

I'll try checking the drive as you suggest when I get back. I've tried to "repair" kaspersky but it made no difference. Should I re-install it on the new machine? Perhaps I have to anyway?

ah if you have W7 then..

type: cmd

into the search box on the start menu, you should have 1 result under programs. right click it and "run as administrator". then try the command i originally mentioned.

if it didnt ask to be schedule at next reboot id assume it didnt check..

I think it did reboot, but maybe I'll try the whole thing again.

Any more thoughts on whether I should sort this before I transfer everything on to a new system?

I'll be back on to this on wednesday, but don't think I won't read your replies, folks......
