I've got the preferences set to open the import dialogue box when Lightroom detects a card reader but nothing happens - any suggestions please

This is a known "bug" on some windows machines. I think it's been fixed in version 2 which is due soon!..

If you have LR open in Library and insert the card it will now open the file selection box so you can select the card from there.

Yeah, same happens here, very annoying it is too :(

Thanks for that - at least it's not a design feature ;)
 
V2 beta surprised me by starting up when I put my card in the reader today so i guess it does work :)
