Lightrrom 4 on a 4yr old Mac

Hi all

Not sure whether this is equipment or PP. Mods, Please move if necessary.

I have a 4 year old Mac Book 13inch. The specs are http://support.apple.com/kb/sp500

Although the specs look viable for lightrrom 4 has anyone actually used it on a similar machine. I dont want to upgrade if i then need a new mac to run it...:eek:

I currently use lightroom 3 and silver fx pro 2 and i keep all the raw files on a WD 1TB external harddrive (5d mk 2 files are huge). i do get the dreaded spinning wheel quite a bit while the machine seems to catch up. I do have a lot of stuff on the machine (only 40gig free from 160) that could be removed which may help.


Any advice, is it worth the upgrade just yet considering the machine capabilities?

Download the free trial and see how you get on?
 
it will run but it won't be great. 4GB ram at least is an absolute must, and you may want to get an SSD (or new mbp whichever makes more sense) and external monitor. Full and old small HDD is pretty bad for performance.

I have an external monitor which is pretty good.

I may just try the freeby, although i think i already know the result.....

I think ill try and clear out the hard drive first. Imovie and iphot are chocka. I havent worked out yet how to import movies into imovie without them actually residing on the mac as opossed to an external HDD. Or, for that matter, how to move them from current location to external HDD and still allow imovie to 'point' to them for any movie projects.

Trip to the mac store genius bar me thinks!!

Lightroom is a lot faster than Aperture and I used to have a 2009 MBP 13" so I expect you to be fine. having said that you would be much better off if you upgrade the HD to either an SSD ( prices have dropped alot recently) or a 7200rpm traditional one. Also 4Gb is a must.

Try moving a folder and creating a symlink in it's place? Hopefully that will trick the app

ooohhh....that sounds great....what does it mean though and how do i do it...lol:lol::lol:

Anything that stops the spinning wheel of death would be great.

I must admit, although im a mac fan the way that Itunes, iphoto and imovie store files is a little infuriateing, although its probably more to do with me not understanding how to set them up properly

just ordered 8 gb of ram (upgrade from the 2 gb currently installed)

hopefully hat will give it a boost
