Sorry to start another thread on this, but I just wanted to ask a couple of quick questions re: the Meike/Linkdelight grips.

Firstly, are they the same company? it says Linkdelight, but people also refer to them as Meike grips?

Secondly, there appear to be two different kinds on there. Essentially one with an LCD screen and one without. Does anybody here have one with the screen, or know if it's worth the extra money over one without? The actual official Nikon one doesn't have one right?

Also, there appear to be different combos of grips, with batters, and/or IR remotes etc. Which is the right one to go for? There seems to be a big range in price, and different batteries, and compartments etc. I'm starting to get a bit confused

I have a Meike grip on my D90 and it's superb.

However if I'm correct the Nikon grip for the D300 is weather sealed and magnesium like the body, not sure if the build of the 3rd party grip would come close.
 
Never use my link delight one as prefer ungripped, but it does not feel like a cheapo Chinese copy. Great value for money.
 
In the same boat, can't decide between the battery version or the LCD version.

I think i'll be getting the the 2 extra bats + BL-3 version as even though they sell a bat+lcd version there is no BL-3 included! :(

The BL-3 thing.. is that so you can fit the wildly expensive other style battery thing so you can shoot 8fps? (you can tell how knowledgable I am right?)
 
yes, bl-3 mean you can fit an EN-EL4a battery to the grip.

Found one for £13, however they don't sell a charger for it :(

Ebay = bat + charger for £60 :(

That's the one I think I will get Scott.
 
I got mine from LD, the one without the screen, but with a 3rd party battery, an adapter for using AA's and the cover for using the nikon super boosted battery [EN4?] I use it on both D300 and D700 and so far the only problem I have ever had is finding that it doesn't always like my genuine Nikon batteries, sometimes giving an intermittent 'flat battery' reading, so I always ensure its he 3rd party one in there now, just to be sure, even though i think its actually only one of three nikon batteries that cause the problem. Fatastic value for money, feels solid and well made and the paddle knob is much nicer than the one on the D700! ;)

I had both, I sold the Nikon.

If anything the buttons on the Meike one are better than the Nikon buttons. On the Meike grip the joystick makes a tactile click when you operate it, whereas the Nikon just had a squishy feel with no click and very little movement, making it bloody hard to tell whether you had pressed it or not.

Rumours abound about the Nikon one being weather sealed but the fact is that it has one thin metal plate running along the a portion of the top and the rest is plastic identical to the Meike one.

The Nikon has a nicer shape though as it has a slight curve on the grip.

All in all I prefer the Nikon for the shape but the buttons are poorer. No difference in build quality, that's just imagination.

This thread is ideal as I've been looking into a third party grip as I don't use grips very often and only want it for the 8fps, the official grip and EN-EL4/cover/charger just makes it too expensive for occasional use.

The grip linked above looks good, does anyone have any recommendations for a generic EN-EL4 and charger?

Just use rechargable AA eneloops instead. Cheaper, and appear to be well loved on here. That's what I'm going to do.

Someone posted a link to where you can get them (think it was Amazon in this instance) on a thread the other day, but can't remember what thread it was
 
I have considered the AA option but would prefer to pay a bit more and go the EN-EL4 as the AAs make the grip heavier still, it's enough hassle as it is keeping the flash fed with batteries and from reading around the camera can be fussy with the AA batteries at times.

bump again.

Ordered midday on the 10th. Email at 5am on the 12th to say it has been shipped. Arrived today. I make that about 9 working days.

Lovely.
