Lithium batteries on aircraft

What is the policy now regarding carry lithium batteries on aircraft?

I believe in carry on luggage. Not in the hold.

Carry on luggage only, and you have to have eyes on them if charging online, and you shouldn’t charge from the aircraft power.

Definitely not in the hold luggage, should be carry on only. Some airlines are limiting how many batteries you can take on board (how they enforce that I don't know), latest directive I've heard is that you are not allowed to use your lithium power banks on board aircraft.

This seems reasonable apart from keeping them in the original retail packaging - how many people have kept the packaging?

• Spare lithium batteries and power banks must be individually protected to prevent short circuits when not in use.
  For example:
  • Keep them in original retail packaging
  • Cover terminals with tape
  • Place each battery in a separate plastic bag or protective pouch

That's largely pointless information. The reason being you'll still need to check what the individual air line states they can often be stricter.

This is only one example. If you haven’t got the original packaging the the other examples will suffice:

• Cover terminals with tape
• Place each battery in a separate plastic bag or protective pouch

For me it would be the latter.

Cabin bags are x rayed and a decent % require a physical search, packs of wet wipes, tins of sweets and all sorts can lead to further investigation. How would that work with hold luggage?

I made the mistake, a long time ago, probably in 2014, of putting a camcorder in the hold luggage with battery attached, The scanner picked it up and I had to remove the battery. Technology must have moved on since then but yes, the scanner did its job. This was in China.

Oh yes there was a piece on the BBC news the other day about that , airlines are rightly concerned about this
have always only put batteries in carry on and use plastic covers that you can get from ebay to cover the contact side of the battery

I'm currently in the US, and had all my camera stuff plus batteries and chargers in it. Carry on, no issues at all. That's flying with KLM.

I bought a little fire safe bag for lithium ion batteries to carry my spare batteries when flying earlier this year.

As mentioned above each airline has different rules on exactly what capacity of batteries you can take and how many of each although no-one ever checked any of mine.

I never said it wasn’t scanned, what a ridiculous take.

I posted that the barrier to escalation with hold luggage is very different to cabin bags.

A pack of baby wipes in carry on will result in a bag search, I’m pretty confident it doesn’t result in a hold bag not getting on board without further investigation.
