Yes
Apologies now for a srange question but twice now I have been out and seen other fellow photographer's and attached to there hot shoe seems to be a little black box which may have a cable linking it to the camera (dont quote me on that) to me it doesn't look like a flash but haven't a clue what else it is? Does anyone know
Looks to be about 1'' 1/2 square?

Unfortunately not! one was at a local fate and she was walking around shooting and the other was at a local wood and there was no off camera flash to be seen?

Possibly a GPS like the Canon GP-E2? It's used to tag the EXIF with the co-ordinates/location of the shot.

Hummmm maybe. Thought it was going to be an easy answer? Should have just gone and asked

GPS. I have one on the 5D3 and another on the 70D. They're quite often the subject of an enquiry (though there's no additional cable unless I need to attach the flash to the 5D3).

It could have been wireless shutter release receiver unit like the Giga T Pro, mine only leaves my camera if I need a flash gun on

Good point

I know at events I have shot in the past occasionally I will pop my camera on a monopod, raise it in the air and shoot from above. This needs wireless :)

I can see where everyone is coming from but my remote flash is only about 2"x 1" where as I said both the units I saw was quite big and square? And would people really leave it on? Once I've done with mine its back in the bag all tucked up till next time.

There's a fella in the local camera club who leaves his Pocket Wizard on top of his camera regardless of what he's attempting to shoot!

Or possibly a wireless transmitter to a mass storage device?
