In the 7d, but suspect that it is the same with 50d, 40d, and other canons with live view.
If you are using Quick Focus mode (i.e. no the view contrast detect), how do you change the focus point?
Using the 8-way nipple does not change the focus point, it only moves the zoom box.
The only way I have found, is to stop live view, then change the point and re-start.
