'Lo' in D200 viewfinder - even when <30 seconds?!

I've got a D200. I understand 'LO' appears when you're in shutter priority and you exceed the widest aperture. But I'm in Aperture priority, and sometimes if I'm pointing somewhere dark, it will say LO even when the exposure is as little as even 1/3 a second?! And other times when I'm pointing at a lighter area I will set the aperture and it will be happy to expose 10", 20" etc! The only way I can get a shutter reading is if I pop the flash in 'rear' sync and then it shows me the true shutter values instead of LO - for example I've just popped it and it now says I need a 10 second exposure at 3.5 .... why can't it just tell me this? It's not like the exposure if larger than 30 seconds?!

its nothing to do with the actual time of the exposure.

"lo" or "hi" is displayed when the metering for the scene is out of the cameras ability to accurately calculate the exposure. it will still fire and you will get an image, but its basically the metering systems best guess, and its warning you that it is just a guess.

Would it not be easier to just put the made to manual then you will get the readings you are after..

I think..

its easier to see the shutter / aperture relationship in M mode when the light is poor, in M mode instead of Lo and Hi, the Exposure comp slider bar will flash instead.

Edit:

I think you're right about it not being able to calculate the exposure. But I don't think using the exposure scale in M mode would be accurate (if that's what you were suggesting?)

Doesn't make sense if it can display a figure once the flash has been popped up. Also it will display the compensation meter in M or S modes, just not A. So it can't be 'beyond the metering range' ...as it's got answers for other modes and you're not changing the metering system!

ok, you carry on as you were

I dont see the point of asking a question if you are going to tell the person answering it that its wrong basically because you cant understand why it does it.

Its a warning that the metering is operating outside its calibrated area - end of.

im not saying use the scale, im saying the scale blinks to let you know its in "lo" or "hi" mode as it wont display either term when you have physically selected the shutter speed and aperture
