Location

Why not contact the eBay seller and point them at the photos?

Thanks for your idea.
I seem to recall that the camera came from a house clearance so wether the seller will show much interest, I don't know.
Worth a try though if I can find the details!

I've dropped Whipsnade Zoo an email this morning to see if they can / will help to confirm the location and possible help towards a date of the photos if I send them scans......hopefully I'll get a positive reply!

Hope you do. If it is whipsnade be nice for them to enlarge the photos and frame them there, having an image from 50+ years ago

Looking good! ......received a reply this afternoon asking me to send the scans through to them with the info that i have managed to get so far.

I've sent the scans and explained what has been discussed on here ( excluded the turkey jokes!!! lol) and how we believe the building resembles the one at Whipsnade.

I'd be more than happy to enlarge and send them a print purely for their help....assuming of course that we are correct in assuming the pics are of Whipsnade!!

I'll be back with more details just as soon as I receive them.

WOW They don't mess about do they ....I only sent the scans an hour ago and I've just received a reply whilst i was typing my last posting:

Here's the confirmation:

"Dear Asha

We can confirm that the black and white images are of Whipsnade Zoo. Unfortunately we are not able to offer much help with dating the photos as there are not enough points of reference. The only feature we have noticed is that the background of the first image includes an extension which was added in 1935. Perhaps you may be able to narrow down the possible date by investigating the camera model?

I am sorry not to be of more help.

Best wishes

Ruth

I can't see the images being older than 1956 simply as Verichrome Pan film wasn't available until then .....unless someone knows different??

Then the childs clothes, the cars etc maybe they narrow the date a little....

Having confirmation of the location is absolutely superb....just imagine if a member came on and said "that's me in that photo when I were a nipper"!! lol

or even better, one of the turkeys dropping in to confirm " that was me gobbling around before i made a great escape so that nasty TP member couldn't eat me up over xmas 1959" !!! lol

Can you put up a higher res image, Asha? I reckon those cars would be a good clue, but they need enlarging more than the copy we have can stand.

The original scans that i did of the negs were a higher res ( i think!! lol) but when i tried to upload them up onto my gallery I received a message saying my files were too large so i reduced them.
I'll have a mess around and see what i can do...

If you crop the higher res versions to just the vehicles before upload, that would get round file size issues..

Thanks for the advice .

I have uploaded two crops of the cars into my gallery, one of which i have adjusted the contrast, the other i have left original as from the scanner.
Please feel free to edit as you wish.

Perhaps these will offer some help.

I could rescan the negative, just scanning the cars and up the resolution if it will help further but it will have to be tomorrow when i do that.

Not showing on your gallery?

Ok..

They show the first vehicle to clearly be a saloon rather than a truck..

The last two look like a pair of split-screen Morris Minors.

I'd say so. Could the saloon be one of those Mercs with the oblong headlights?

I think the earlier call on it being a Wolseley 6/99 is right.

This link may help identify more about the morris minors

http://www.mmoc-ni.co.uk/clubs/minor_history.htm

as it states:

"All models until 1956 had split front window screen"

and

1956 - Morris Minor 1000 introduced; 948cc (end of split screen and 803cc engine)

Obviously doesn't date the photo to 1956 but the fact there looks to be 2 split screen moggies in the pic perhaps suggests they were still a popular car??

Why not contact the eBay seller and point them at the photos?

I've contacted the ebay seller today following the advice from Byker28i

He knows nothing about the history, however he is noetheless curious and is going to make an attempt at contacting the gentleman from whom he obtained the camera from.

All may be revealed given time!

Nothing to add, just that this is a very interesting to read - good luck. And for what it's worth, there seems to be no clues in the EXIF data:)
