After processing in photoshop, when I try to save the changes I get the message in a box with a red X
'COULD NOT SAVE .............jpg BECAUSE THE FILE IS LOCKED. USE THE PROPERTIES COMMAND IN THE WINDOWS EXPLORER TO UNLOCK THE FILE'

Where is Windows Explorer in Vista? I have been used to XP. Why has this message started to appear now as it has never appeared in the past when PP. I must have inadvertently changed something. Help please. merv:bang::bang:

Is just the same as in XP, several ways to get to it My Computer or Start > Run > explorer or right click on start button and select explore. you get the idea

Navigate to the jpg in question, not in front of a vista machine at the moment but can't remember being an unlock option

Thinking about it, it is probably read only failing that just sava as a different name

get a mac....

:D

Right click the file and select Properties. Untick the read only box.

No Neil, they were saved from my memory card onto the hard drive:bang:

This is weird. I saved the pics onto 2 external hard drives, one as a backup. On one of the drives I am having the problem saving edits. The other one however will let me do edits in PS and save them with no problem. The message about locked files does not show at all on the 2nd drive!!! :bang::bang:

defo get a mac, but permission issues like this can occur on mac too, so don't use that as your reason for getting one, just get one anyway :-)

Answering the original question - Windows key + E is the quickest.

Oh and, get a mac or Windows 7!

I think the only mac I'll be buying is one to keep me dry in wet weather!!
Anyhow the problem seems to have disappeared. I have the pics on two external hard drives - one as a back-up. The 'saving' problem always happened in the same set and not in the other so I deleted the troublesome one and reloaded the pics from the drive that gave no probs and guess what - I can work on either set now with no hitches. Will never understand how one set got locked and the other didnt. Thanks for all your ideas. merv:clap:

Sounds silly but if you leave your computer on all the time and you see stuff like this popping up more than just occasionally, restart it. I don't switch mine off unless I have to and eventually errors like the one you were seeing crop up. For instance, I can't delete a folder just now, for no logical reason - restart or log off will fix it, when I can be bothered, probably next week :cuckoo:
