Any ideas as to the best logo creator software (for a Mac), and for free.

I just can't get on with Photoshop, I can never seem to get good clean sharp text.

I have a simple text logo I want to produce and not sure where to begin software wise.

Any ideas?
 
How are you creating the text in Photoshop, there are a few options for rendering it... (None / Sharp / Crisp / Strong / Smooth). The default is normally set to 'None' so that may explain why the text isnt as sharp as it could be.

Photoshop/ Elements has everything you need to crate a logo. Logo creation software is always poor in my opinion.
 
depends on the application of the logo but as already mentioned generic logo design software is pretty rubbish and very basic. You would be best to try and master some basics using photoshop/corel draw/illustrator if you can. You should be able to achieve a nice vector design then just mastering some of the basics.
 
I used the FOSS app Inkscape for mine, available for Windows/Mac/linux.

The app uses vector graphics so this means curves are nice, even if you re scale things and make them huge.

http://inkscape.org/ web sites not that great but if you get stuck a quick google should find the help you need, theres a couple of really good sites out there.
 
^^ inkscape is a very good program.

I actually use illustrator but have used inkscape in the past. Converting text to paths is something everyone should try when making logos so they can give the font a bit of a personal touch.

My latest typography I've posted below made for someone in illustrator. The same is achievable in inkscape.

The bb part is just a typeface called skinny regular with one of the b's flipped and then converting it to paths you can start chopping it up and joining as parts as you like.

All logos should really be designed as a vector so they can be scalable in the future. If you do it this way first off you wont have to keep going back and doing a redesign next time when you need it larger. Most people tend to design a small web banner type logo as JPG then when they need it big enough for a billboard end up having to redo it.

I use CS5 and corel draw X5 but inkscape is free and is capable of achieving some great results, i don't find it as easy to use as corel but if you take the time to learn it then it is powerful and there are plenty of video tutorials and websites offering advice on the program.
 
I've been having a play in PS but I really don't find it very easy to come up with what I want, and then scaling it for use which gives it a crisp wherever it's required.

For instance, this looks fine when I view it in PS and yet when I upload it, it looks pretty awful!

I always make an image a lot larger in what program I'm using. Even if its not a vector. It makes it easier to see what you are producing and resizing downwards is not a bad thing compared to resizing larger.

What quality are you saving the jpeg? Tried saving as png?

Its far too cramped, not sure if thats just the design or how its just uploaded. What font are you using??
