London day trip

Hi,

I'm in London for a day in January, doing a bit of shopping and may be going on a stadium tour at the Emirates.

Anyway, I have a few hours to fill so hoping to get some photos. I'm particularly interested in the Gherkin, I'm fascinated by the shape and I've never seen any close up shots of it, I'm guessing this must be because it's difficult to photograph from close up? The nearest tube is Aldgate, is it easy access from there?

Also, wouldn't mind shooting the o2 or canary wharf but no idea where to get the best vantage points. I'll be getting around by tube, bearing in mind I'm only there a few hours so can't walk too far.

Oh and I'm travelling light (10-20 and possibly 50mm prime, or 30 if I get one by then) so can't be doing any telephoto stuff.

Nothing better other than seeing a game!

Yes, not far to walk - as long as you know where you are going! I've seen an awesome photo of the Gherkin which is actually a reflection in the window of a nearby office - if I can find the link I'll post it. The location of the building means it's not easy to get all in one shot so something artistic / detail might be better.

Easy to access both but not easy to get a good vantage point :( In my view, they are both better by night but that sounds unlikely?

Shouldn't be a problem.

Theres quite a nice church right by the gerkin, thats worth a pic as well as your there. as for the gerkin It's not the easiest place to get a shot of as theres building all around it.

Here are a few Gherkin shots - two with a 7D and 85mm prime and two with my Fuji F100fd compact....

I agree, I will be around whilst it's dark (train back is at 7) so it could be possible, but not sure if I'm gonna carry a tripod. I've seen some good shots of the o2 from the river but looks like they were taken on a boat. Thanks for all the info, very helpful

Tim those last two are brilliant. Not sure how I'm going to top those   The church gives a nice traditional/modern combination!

you could if you were to go by car instead of train park at the o2 and then catch the river bus to the city or to westminster. Its pretty easy to drive to the 02 and you can book a parking space in advance and the river bus might give you a different angle to shoot from.

Might look at doing that another time, didn't fancy driving as I'm coming from York so about a 4 hour drive, and I got my train ticket for half the price of the petrol I'd probably use. What's it cost to park at the o2 for a day roughly?

i think from memory it was £17 and i think the parking space is for 24 hours.
Didn`t go on the water bus but it looked pretty good and we thought we would go back and use it some time.
