Yes
Or should I say Camera shops that I could possibly come across while taking the family around the typical sightseeing spots of London.:)

We are going for a few nights over new year, and will be visiting all the usual ie, Parliament, Buckingham Palace, west end etc etc. Are there any shops I would be likely to bump into?;)

Take a walk down Tottenham Court Road... Always bargains to be had somewhere along there. :)

Before the internet was common place TCR used to be THE place to buy electricals. There are tons of shops down it that will sell camera's etc...

I bought my first bridge camera and first DSLR from ASK Electronics on TCR.

Not sure about bargains, but was in Kingsley Photographic the other day, 93 TCR, not a big place, no large walk round area, but seemed to have a good deals and range of stuff.

i used to do tottenham court road for bargains...that was 25 years ago...if i lived in london now i would still use the internet...but for a gad about tcr may show something which is just worth going for considering postage and the fact your hands are on it
got my minox there about half way down on the left facing camden end...i think it was near the tube station....probably a kebab shop now

Just off of Oxford street you have Camera World, they are located in Wells Street.

Seconded. I like the shop and have bought a fair bit of gear from them over the years. They know what they're selling and they're not overpriced.

Also worth visiting Calumet - either Drummond Street (behind Euston Station) or Wardour Street (just off Oxford street). As a Nikon user, you may also want to visit Nikon heaven AKA Grays of Westminster at Churton Street (tube to Pimlico).

Have fun and hope you get some great shots - but be weary of the tripod police! :nono:

Which shops are on that road?
Probably none that you'd have ever actually heard of before, but the entire street is littered with electronics shops (including digital photography). There is one (that I found anyway) that is specifically a photography shop, but many of the electronics places also carry a wide range of bodies and lenses and will usually throw in a bunch of things free and drop the price a bit to get the sale.

If I lived in London, I'd probably do the same, but you can barter with many of the stores there from what I found on occasional visits to London over the past 15 years or so. I picked up a lil Fuji point & shoot for the wife at one of them earlier this year when we were down there for the Broadcast Video Expo, he had it on the shelf for about £150 (going rate was about £160-170 or so on that model at the time after doing some quick online checking from the cellphone)... We talked him down to £120 and he threw in an 8Gig SD card. :)

In keeping with the spirit of the title of this thread, I think you should make sure you visit the BRITISH MUSEUM. It should be an easy sell to the family, and the Great Court can be a good place to take photos.

But after you've visited the museum, you'll probably fancy a rest and a cup of coffee, and therefore a visit to Aperture Photographic is required. It's a wonderful coffee shop / camera shop in Museum Street, just south of the museum. Where else can you get a cup of Java and see a 300mm f/2 lens? (No, that's not a typo. They had a Nikon 300mm f/2 last year. £9000 if I recall correctly.)

And then you'll find yourself in a little cluster of camera shops:
- York Cameras in Bury Place
- Microglobe in Galen Place (off Bury Place)
- Jessops Classic Photographica in Great Russell Street
- Camera City in Little Russell Street
- The Classic Camera in Pied Bull Yard (off Bury Place)

Plus you're just around the corner from the Jessops flagship and the Jacobs flagship, which are opposite one another in New Oxford Street.

Incidentally, next time you're planning a "family outing", this is a useful resource - www.ukcamera.com lists pretty much every camera shop in the UK, by town.
