As i have a hospital appointment in London next week i thought i would combine the visit with an afternoon/early evening photo session in the city.
It's been quite some time since my last visit and never toggeg up.
Is there anything i should know, avoid or specificaly do in relation to photography in the Capital.
Your thoughts and ideas will be very much appreciated.

Docklands can be an interesting place to take photos, mix of old and new.

The city itself (square mile) is very heavly policed with the so called ring of steel:eek:

In light of all the stop and search malarky unless you want to specifically take anything there probably worth giving a miss
I know you should be able to take whatever you like, but depends whether you fancy a bit of agro or not

Been into the City to photograph many times, omly ever got stopped once and then we were just asked what we were photography and we then went on our way (He even radioed colleagues to let them know we were about). Never had any aggro.

Maybe its better these days then, worked in the city for a while on several civil engineering projects and the Corporation were nearly as bad as the city police for all sorts of restrictions

Excellent news if it has improved and I stand corrected

In my experience, as soon as you start taking photos, you will get all end of hassle in the Docklands. The Southbank is a great spot for taking photos, anywhere between Waterloo and Tower Bridge. Spitalfields/Brick Lane are good too.

Well that's weird never had a problem in Docklands, perhaps my local accent helps on the odd occasion anyone has said something :)

Just goes to show that there is no hard and fast rule when it comes to restrictions.

If you do give it a go the old cranes on the old V and A dock near Excel are some of my favourites

Note - the South Bank is actually private property and you will be stopped if you look like you're anything but a tourist.

The London Eye is always good to shoot, but make sure you shoot from the road.

Wouldn't take a proper tripod with you as you're likely to get hassle if you use it. However, squirreling away a gorillapod might work as they are rather less conspicuous than plonking a big tripod on the pavement.

Otherwise, just wander around in a fairly subtle way and look for interesting light and shade and angles, and you're sorted.

what kind of things would you like to photograph? what interests you??
Architecture ,Culture, People.

I shoot on the Southbank every couple of weeks and nearly always carry a tripod with me and have never been stopped. It's a great place to shoot and the architecture of the National Theatre alongside some of the buildings are fascinating. You could walk along up to London Bridge. MoreLondon is a new striking development and quite different from the architecture of the theatre buildings. In between this walk you also have the Tate Modern.

Then you've either been very lucky or you look like a tourist

Joking apart, I've been evicted twice from the South Bank but then I was shooting with models and power pack heads..

I've also used a tripod around the South Bank any by the Shell Centre to get shots of the Eye. Never been stopped or questioned.

Docklands should be fine as long as you dont have a tripod on you, for which they ask you to apply for a licence.

Really? Been there a couple of times with my tripod and no one has said a thing to me...

I might be wrong, but I am sure the docklands meet a couple of months back needed permits. Could be that they were over a certain number of people.

You must be a stone's throw from the Natural History Museum....if you're into architecture its a great venue...:) Also camera friendly inside too!!!

Yeh sounds like a good starting point. Will probably spend a couple of hours there in the afternoon.

Cheers
