Hi Everybody,

With the 'Er Indoors and the little one up north visiting family, I have a free weekend approaching.

Inspired by the tool recommeneded by Tringa in this thread http://www.talkphotography.co.uk/forums/showthread.php?t=338680
which shows sunrise and sunset times and directions for anywhere in the world I thought about heading into London at silly o'clock in the morning and catching some sunrise shots. Followed by (fingers crossed) an hour or so of being able to shoot some of the sights but without the masses of people around.

So, what I was hoping for, as a northerner living down south, was some advice from those in the know, of places in London to get some good sunrise shots.

Cheers

The problem is that London is pretty flat, as cities go, so finding a good vantage point above the landmass for a wide sunrise shot will be a bit tricky. Can you see east from Hampstead Heath? I can't recall offhand. Greenwich might be a good option actually - you may get a good view from the park.

Greenwich would be a good spot for a shot over the river since the river is very wide there, although the Thames Barrier would probably be best.

Thanks All,

Greenwich might be an idea, I'll check it out on the sunrise predictor thing when I get home.

It does show that on Saturday morning if I stand near HMS Belfast then the sun should rise through Tower Bridge. So I'm thinking of trying that.

But will definately check on Greenwich

As already suggested a wide sunrise is not possible from central London.

The south end of Waterloo bridge will give a sunrise over parts of the city. The south end of the Millennium bridge will give similar views but as you will be closer to the city the buildings will dominate more.

Greenwich Park will give you height but not a sunrise over central London, but it could give you a view point for reflections from the towers at Canary Wharf.

However, you can't do both one one day.

Where ever you choose I suggest you arrive about 45 mins before sunrise.

I've never been one for early mornings, and I have never taken photos of London Sunrises... but on a many occaision during a mis-spent youth I have watched the sun rise from Waterloo Bridge and Golden Jubilee Bridge. You get a great view of the city, the Thames and St Pauls.

According to TPE you should be able to shoot the sun rising under Tower Bridge from London Bridge at the end of October. May be worth a TP trip?

Wow, thanks for all the replies, lots to think about. I reckon I'll recce these places tonight, checking for parking etc and head off in the morning, weather permitting.

Assuming I can get my head off those comfy pillows at half 3.:p

Hollis_f, October sounds like a great idea. I'm guessing the sunrise will be at a far more acceptble hour too:D

Well the weather forecast of cloudy, means i'll be having a lie in,:thumbsdown:

You can see east from Hampstead Heath - Kite Hill / Parliament Hill both offer excellent views.

Blag your way to the top of The Shard! It looks astonishing.

I didn't think it was open yet? Thought they were still building at the top

Its much easier in February!

Thanks all again for the suggestions. Plenty to think about for another time. Unfortunately BBC weather let me down. The forecast was 4 till 7 am - cloud, followed by blue skies from 7.

So i thought i'll have lie in (ish), get the first tube in, miss the sunrise but get plenty of shots while it's still quiet.

Typically at half 5 I saw a beautiful sunrise over Wembley Stadium from the central line :bonk:

Then the whole morning was quite cloudy. Still, never one to waste a day, I thought I'd have a crack at time lapse.

Roll on the next free weekend for sunrises (Oct for a London TP meet:shrug:)
