Folks,

Thinking about heading for London zoo to take some photo's.

I am rubbish at holding a long lens steady, but was concerned at using a tripod in such a public place, so I have ordered myself a monopod to help me out.

Anybody ever had an issue using one at a place like this ?

Cheers

Personally i didnt use mine, but then i was with 2 pushchairs with 3 kids in, it was too much fuss.

i recommend the aquarium
(flash, pl filter to kill reflection. lens an inch from the glass and patience) see my flickr for my fish shots (not too bad for a first time i thought)

I was at London Zoo a couple of weeks ago, and whilst I didn't use one myself I saw a couple of people using monopods. ZSL don't seem to have any issues :) The monkey walkthrough is good as is the large aviary on the other side of the canal.

Thanks folks...

I haven't had the camera long so am totally in learning mode.

I know the zoo isn't ideal with bars etc... but it will give me the opportunity to play and learn and explore what i can do.

I am going on my own so I can take my time and try different things.

will 100% try the aquarium, great suggestion:thumbs:

Oh and great photo's from both of you btw (having just looked)

Cheers

The Animal Adventure area is pretty good, Red Panda's tend to be quite photogenic :D

The Rain Forest experience can also be great fun. These little critters hide a bit but at feeding time you can get some great shots of them playing. This one played 'hide & seek' with me for 15 minutes :annoyed:

Great shots !!

I hope I get some shots that come close...

I think it will be an interesting day out as I won't have anybody chasing me onto the next thing to go look at :-)

Cheers

main problem you'll get will be getting anywhere near the exhibits - you do know its school hols don't you

was there on sunday and it was fine - but then again I didn't take the camera and got there for opening time, but was getting hectic by time i left

then agaon, the lion cubs came out on cue!!!

i went to chester zoo awhile ago but wasnt sure if i should take an SLR camera let alone a tripod. anyway when i got there there was loads of people not just with slr's but with huge tripods and massive lens

chester is also much better for getting decent shots due to the amount of space and better exhibit areas.

i think next time i plan to go to london i'll go to whipsnade

I will be going next Wednesday... I was hoping middle of the week might be fairly quiet.. I can jump on the train so its an easy trip for me.

I know its going to be busy, but I am happy to take pictures of anything so will find the quieter spots :-) (I hope)

Thanks for the feedback...

You do know the kids are on holiday at the moment... could be busy.

I went on Sunday, busy it was, but good fun. If you get to the Tiger enclosure, you can blur the wire fence out and get good quality photos.

Never had a problem using a monopod at London Zoo. Although I haven't been for a year or so, there are excellent opportunities - I especially like the squirrel monkey enclosure, the gorrillas, and the butterfly world and new bird enclosure bits as there is nothing between you and the subjects.
